Events Overtake Us: Too Much To See,
And It's Only Monday--(Nov. 30, 1998)

Uh oh, here we go again.

As the season starts in earnest, with college hoops already well under way, that old, familiar sinking feeling starts in the pit of our stomach, that dread, that fear and loathing (hey, that's someone else's line, right).   That feeling of being overwhelmed. . . . like we just can't keep up with it all.

Hey, we're here to make some sense out of all this for you, right?  Get a grip.  Because it's only Monday.

Right.  It's only Monday, and today marks the beginning of the 2nd Annual Reebok Compton Tip-Off Classic.

But there's a ton of other action as well in and around SoCal, most of it high school hoops, but some college stuff too.

In addition to the Reebok thingy, there's also the 47th Annual Pacific Shores Basketball Tournament.  See our separate article on that one for details.

There's the USC v. St. Bonaventure game at the Sports Arena, which some scheduling genius decided to play at 5:00 p.m. we guess so it could be televised at 8:00 p.m. during prime-time on the East Coast.  Er, um, ok.   But that just about rules out anyone seeing the game here in L.A. unless you're not otherwise gainfully employed or happen to be as obsessed as we are here at SoCalHoops.   And if you can't make it down to Compton, or you are not otherwise occupied with one of the other great high school games being played, you should definitely check out the soon-to-be 4-0 Trojans, who ought to be able to handle the Bonnies.

Oh and there's also the Cal State Northridge game tonight at Northridge at 7:05 where the Matadors will take on NAIA Southern California College, which is coached by the youngest head coach in NAIA, and perhaps all of college basketball, Cameron Dollar.  The game won't be on TV (obviously), and as the Daily News notes today, it won't be on radio either (because Northridge is probably the only D-I school on the face of the planet that doesn't have a radio contract to broadcast its home games. . . but that's a different story), so the only way you'll be able to keep up with the action is by going there.

In addition to the college games, there are also quite a few other high school games starting with the beginning of the season.

First up is in the City Section, and LACES (a magnet school) will take on LA High's Romans at LA High at 2:30 (jv) and 4:00 p.m. for the varsity game.  Also taking place at the same time is Garfield at Fremont, and then later tonight, Dorsey will take on Lynwood at Lynwood at 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. for the jv and varsity games, respectively (although we have to say that the CIF Southern Section schedules have this game being played at Dorsey, so you'd be wise to check with the schools before making a trip either way). We know that the latter game will get covered by our own Jason Day (at least he says he'll cover it but if the game is at Dorsey, he's gonna be maaaaaaaad. Hey, Jason, don't say we didn't warn you).

Other tournaments and games scheduled for today (at least according to the CIF Southern Section advance schedule--which is printed about 3 months ahead, so it's possible that some of these games have been rescheduled or won't take place), are listed below.  As with our other schedules posted here and throughout the site, we have a warning: CALL THE SCHOOL OR OTHERWISE CONFIRM THE GAME LOCATION BEFORE DRIVING THERE.  IF IT'S BEEN MOVED, DON'T BLAME US.  We just rely on what we're given by others.

So here's what else is up today, November 30, 1998:

Orangewood Academy (Academy League) will be playing in it's very own Tip-Off Tournament today, which will feature teams like La Sierra Academy, Shalhevet, Heritage Christian, Twin Pines,

There's also a Brethren Christian Tournament also which gets underway today, in which St. Anthony's, Pacific Hills, Salesian, and a couple of other teams will play.

The Buena Park Tournament also gets started today, running until Dec. 5, with teams like Whitney, Buena Park, Kennedy (O.C),   Saddleback, Garden Grove, Rancho Alamitos, Magnolia, Downey,  and Mayfair.

One of the bigger tournaments scheduled to start today is the Loara Tournament, and it is scheduled to feature Loara, El Modena, California, Sunny Hills, Servite, La Quinta Westminster, Valencia (Placentia), Pacific,   Santa Margarita, Irvine, Woodbridge,  and Esperanza.

How about the Bolsa Grande Tournament?   This one is also scheduled to start today, and will feature Santa Ana Valley, Katella, Fullerton, Long Beach Wilson, Savanna, Laguna Beach and host Bolsa Grande.

Don't forget about the Lompoc Tournament, featuring Valley Christian/Santa Maria,  Lompoc, Carpinteria, and a couple of others as well.

What about the Beaumont Tournament?  This is one of the bigger Riverside County tournaments  which also gets started today, featuring host Beaumont, Coachella Valley, Indio, Rubidoux, Apple Valley, Yucaipa, Banning (not LA Banning), Rim of the World, San Jacinto, Yucca Valley,  Redlands West Valley, Bloomington, and Hemet.

The Saugus Tournament also gest started today, and that one will feature teams like Saugus, Calabasas, Quartz Hill, Antelope Valley, Royal, Westlake, Oxnard, and Rio Mesa.

The Claremont Tournament also gets started, and that one features (as far as we can tell), Claremont and Moreno Valley. We don't have any idea who else is scheduled, because according to the CIF schedules, no one else in Southern Section is; so you might want to verify this one before header over to Claremont High.

According to the CIF Southern Section schedule, the Damien Tournament also gets started today and runs through the 5th of December, and is supposed to feature Damien and Duarte, but like the Claremont thingee, we can't seem to find any schedule of anyone else being in it.  So check first before driving over.

Another one that may or may not be happending is the San Gorgonio Tournament, which will feature host San Gorgonio and Alta Loma; again, we couldn't find this one on anybody else's schedule, so it may or may not be happening. Check with the schools first.

Another one with a seeming scheduling irregularity is the "La Costa Canyon Tournament" which only showed up on the schedules of La Costa Canyon and La Sierra so whether this is really a tournament or just a single game is open to question.  As with the others, call first to verify it's still on.

There are also a ton of single games (i.e., non-tournament) scheduled for today.  We present these in no particular order; as always call first or check your local paper to verify a game time and location:

Walnut High will play Rancho Cucamonga at Walnut;
Don Bosco Tech will play at South El Monte;
Ventura will play at Hueneme;
Aquinas plays Noli Indian at home;
Campbell Hall plays Faith Baptist at home;
Western plays at Century;
Pioneer Baptist will play California Baptist at home;
Valencia (Valencia) will play at Lancaster;
Buena Park plays something called "PORAC" (at least according to the CIF schedule)--but then we're wondering who's hosting the Buena Park tourney if they are elsewhere;
Littlerock plays at Barstow;
Palmdale plays at Burroughs Ridgecrest;
Highland is at La Canada;
Lutheran LA is at Viewpoint;
Imperial is at Southwest;
Arlington is at Corona;
Rancho Verde is at Canyon Springs;
Santa Maria is at Paso Robles;
Santa Ynez is at San Luis Obispo;
Harvard-Westlake is at Moorpark;
California Lutheran is at Hamilton (how come this one didn't make it onto the LA City schedule? Is it a different Hamilton?);
Pomona is at Chaffey;
Gabrielino is at Temple City;
South Hills is at Azusa;
Nogales is at Ontario;
Brea Olinda is at Rowland
Cabrillo is at Pasadena;
El Toro is at Aliso Niguel;
Trabuco Hills is at Costa Mesa;
Hueneme is at Ventura;
Paloma Valley is at Norte Vista;
Fountain Valley hosts Tustin;
Valley Torah is at South Bay Lutheran;
Calvary Baptist is at Pioneer Baptist;
West View hosts West Valley Christian

Geez, it's only Monday, and just the first day of the season, and already we're exhausted.   Can't wait to see how we feel by March when the State Finals take place.

See you then.

If we live that long.
