47th Annual Pacific Shores
Tournament Starts Today--(Nov. 30, 1998)

The 47th Annual Pacific Shores Basketball Tournament, co-hosted by Redondo Union High School and Mira Costa High School starts today.  This one features some great teams, including Redondo Union, Mira Costa, Serra, Fairfax, Morningside, San Pedro, and some other schools we haven't seen yet, such as LA Locke, Banning, Bell, LA University, St. Bernards, Hawthorne, South Torrance, Pacifica and LA Washington.  There will be some big time players, like Fairfax's Jason Morrisette (6'-3" Jr. SG/PF) and Joe Shipp (6'-5" Sr. SF/PF), Redondo's Andrew Zahn (6'-9' Jr. C/F), Walter White (6'-5" Jr. F), Dijon Thompson (6'-5" So. PG), Titus Hunt (6'-3" Sr. F). Dylan Mathis (6'-5" Jr. SG), Keith Ellison (5'-9" Fr. PG), Joe Buck (6'-5" Sr. C),  Randy Evans (6'-0" Sr. G),  Sam Chance (5'-10" Jr. G), Andrew Morris (5'-10" Jr. G), and Andre Jones (6'-3" Jr. F). Mira Costa will feature Jesse Boyd (6'-9" Sr. F/C), while Serra has Earl Lewis (6'-5" Sr. SF/PF), Aerick Sanders (6'-8" Jr. C), Doyle Cole (6'-6" Jr. PG/SG/SF/PF) and Ryan Odums (6'-1" Sr. PG/SG) in addition to a ton of other good talent.

If you want to split your time between the Compton Tip-off and this one, we can't think of a better way to do it, and best of all, the driving distance isn't too great.

Here's the Pool Play/ First & Second Round schedule:

At Mira Costa High,  Monday, November 30
6:00 p.m.-- Game # 6: Banning v. Bell
7:30 p.m.-- Game # 7: Morningside v. LA University

At Redondo Union High, Monday, November 30
6:00 p.m.-- Game # 3 St. Bernard's v. LA Washington
7:30 p.m.-- Game #1 Redondo v. Hawthorne

At Mira Costa High, Tuesday, December 1
6:00 p.m.-- Game # 5: Fairfax v. San Pedro
7:30 p.m.-- Game # 8:  Mira Costa v. South Torrance

At Redondo Union High, Tuesday December 1
6:00 p.m.-- Game # 4: Serra v. LA Locke
7:30 p.m.-- Game # Pacifica v. Carson

Pool play ends on Tuesday, and the teams will advance to the winners and losers brackets, respectively.  Here's the schedule from there:

At Redondo Union High, Wednesday, December 2
6:00 p.m. Winners games 3 & 4
7:30 p.m.  Winners games 1 & 2
At Mira Costa High, Wednesday, December 2
6:00 p.m. Winners games  5 & 6
7:30 p.m.  Winners games 7 & 8

In the Losers bracket, here's the schedule for Wednesay:

At Redondo Union High, Wednesday, December 2
3:00 p.m. Losers games 3 & 4
4:30 p.m.  Losers games 1 & 2
At Mira Costa High, Wednesday, December 2
3:00 p.m. Losers games  5 & 6
4:30 p.m.  Losers games 7 & 8

From there, the bracketing and the game schedule is easy to figure out if you've got the actual graphic depiction, but pretty hard to describe, and given the teams and the talent playing, just about anything can happen.   The Championship game will be played this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Mira Costa High School, and if things work out as expected, you may see Redondo or Serra going against either Mira Costa or Fairfax.

But the rest of the teams are rumored to be pretty decent too, and we did get a chance to see San Pedro this past week at the We Care Classic, and while they got hammered by Manual Arts and Fremont, they will certainly have regrouped again and will be ready for this one.  Morningside is also impressive this year. We don't know anything really about Locke, Hawthorne, Pacifica, Carson or Washington, and Banning's entire program is on probation with the City Section as a result of the violations in the girls and boys programs last year, so we don't really know what to expect there.

These will be great games. Don't miss them.
