: That is a totally different thing that what I am talking about. Rules are rules and if there are no at-large spots available, you're out if you don't get an automatic bid. I'm not saying that is right, but at least its straight forward.
: What I am talking about is the coach's poll that determines seeding. It typically doesn't differ much from the MaxPreps rankings, but somehow this San Dimas team got seeded despite being ranked 32nd in the division. They finished third in their league and got in after winning a tiebreaker game. 14-14 overall season. A dozen or so teams had better resumes.
CIFSS asks the coordinators not to release the final poll because when they are putting the bracket together they do not have to hold to the poll. Adjustments are made in the groupings and that does not mean that San Dimas was actually ranked by the coaches, it could have just been an adjustment made by the committee who put that bracket together.
A group of coaches meet and are divided up to work on divisions that have no teams associated with them or their leagues. They are given some direction in how to proceed but then are allowed to make some adjustments based on league finish, travel distance, etc. Each division is put together by a different group of coaches so not every division is put together in the same exact way, there is always some small discrepancies from how each divisional bracket was formed. Some coordinators interpret guidelines differently and some don't understand some guidelines even after being given the instructions. It is just the way it is. At least the teams can prove it on the court irregardless of "where they were seeded."
