So as of today, Friday, 2/7/2020, I have 32 teams exactly, qualified for the playoffs. Thirty of these teams are now designated 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th. Two teams are qualified and have their placements to be determined. There are three more teams with a chance to qualify, meaning that the division could end up with 32,33,34 or 35 teams maximum.
Here are the first place teams (11, possibly 12):
Paloma Valley, Xavier Prep, Ontario Christian, Holy Martyrs, Santa Clara**, Bloomington Christian, Santiago/G.G., Duarte, Arroyo, St. Pius X- St. Matthias**, Big Bear
** Finished in a three way tie with two non 4AA teams
Here are the second place teams (8 as of now):
Westlake, Pasadena Poly, Portola, Bassett, Whitney, Moreno Valley, Rancho Alamitos, Barstow
3rd place teams (10 at this time)
La Salle, Montclair, Notre Dame (Riverside), Citrus Valley, Pilibos, Garey, Godinez, Coachella Valley, Jurupa Valley, La Quinta/Westminster
4th place teams (1)
Qualified Teams, placement TBD (2 spots)
Highland (possible three way tie for 1st place IF Knight defeats Lancaster tonight...or 2nd place if Lancaster wins)
EITHER Flintridge Sacred Heart OR Marymount will qualify as a third place team when their tie is broken. The 4th place team is out.
Three teams with a chance to make playoffs
Norwalk (will likely finish in a tie for 2nd place with La Mirada. Only two teams advance out of the 4-team league. Tiebreaker unknown?
Rancho Mirage (ended in a tie for third with Shadow Hills, tiebreaker unknown?
Schurr (MAY end up in a tie for third place with San Gabriel IF they beat them in their game tonight...some missing results in the league.
So there are now 32 teams/spots qualified, with anywhere from 0-3 additional teams to add to the division. There is really no way of knowing how these tiebreakers are settled. Schurr will definitely be out if they lose to San Gabriel tonight. Note that La Mirada, Shadow Hills and San Gabriel are all non-4AA teams. Only the tie between Flintridge Sacred Heart and Marymount involves both teams from 4AA.
Here is how I would rank the top 25 playoff eligible teams in Division 4AA. I am not including the teams that didn't qualify, though Inglewood, Buena Park, San Marcos and Calabasas would definitely be ranked among these teams.
1. Paloma Valley (25-3)
2. Westlake (19-8)
3. Xavier Prep (25-3)
4. La Salle (21-7)
5. Ontario Christian (25-2)
6. Santa Clara (15-8)
7. Holy Martyrs (23-3)
8. Highland (18-10)
9. Pasadena Poly (16-6)
10. Notre Dame (Riverside) (20-8)
11. Orange Vista (18-9)
12. Montclair (17-5)
13. Bassett (19-5)
14. Portola (17-8)
15. Moreno Valley (20-8)
16. Citrus Valley (14-9)
17. Pilibos (20-8)
18. Arroyo (16-11)
19. Santiago/G.G. (16-10)
20. Garey (16-9)
21. St. Pius X- St. Matthias (17-11)
22. Whitney (12-12)
23. Bloomington Christian (12-3)
24. Coachella Valley (14-7)
25. Duarte (15-5)
I think three teams that have been overlooked in the CIF polls are Santa Clara, Highland and Citrus Valley. Santa Clara ended up in a three way tie with Grace Brethren and St. Bonaventure and has a had a good season. Highland will finish either second, or in a three way tie for first depending on tonight's Knight-Lancaster result. Citrus Valley has had a very solid season, finishing third in league behind Yucaipa and Cajon. They have played a tough non league schedule and their losses have come against quality opponents.
