Sofia Saldivar scored a layup with 7 seconds remaining to lift host Orangewood Academy to a 59-58 nonleague victory Saturday over Etiwanda.
It was a significant turnaround for Orangewood Academy (19-5), ranked No. 19 in the state by Cal-Hi Sports, following Monday's 59-54 home loss to No. 18 Chaminade (17-6).
Saldivar finished with 9 points for Orangewood Academy, which prevailed against No. 6 Etiwanda (20-4) for the first time in three all-time meetings.
Sydney Gandy led the Spartans with 17 points and Elodie Lalotte added 15 points for Orangewood Academy, which led 46-41 entering the fourth quarter.
Daisia Mitchell led the Eagles with 13 points, Jessica Peterson contributed 12 points and Breanne Ha added 11 points for Etiwanda, which rallied from a 53-49 deficit with 5 minutes remaining to take a 56-55 lead with 3:25 left on a layup by Joy Campbell.
Gandy helped the Spartans regain the advantage 57-56 on a floater in the key with 3 minutes left, before Etiwanda took its final lead at 58-57 with 1:11 left on a steal and layup by Peterson.
The Eagles had a chance to add to their advantage in the final minute, but Mitchell missed the front end of a 1-and-1 free-throw situation. Etiwanda still had possession with 25 seconds left, but Orangewood Academy forced a turnover, which led to a fast break and the deciding basket by Saldivar.
Campbell shot a free-throw line jumper just before time expired, but the shot caromed off the rim, allowing the Spartans to win for the 12th time in their past 13 contests.
Orangewood Academy has another significant nonleague game Feb. 4 against Palisades (14-8), which only lost 51-49 to Chaminade on Saturday.
Etiwanda concludes its regular season with four Baseline League opponents, looking to add to its 95-game league winning streak since 2011, the longest active run in among CIF-Southern Section girls programs.
