Nicole Rodriguez scored 19 points, including 12 in the fourth quarter, as Rosary Academy, No. 13 in the state according to Cal-Hi Sports, snapped No. 3 Mater Dei's 90-game Trinity League winning streak Tuesday with a 65-55 victory at Meruelo Athletic Center.
Kaylee Byon added 18 points, all in the second half, for the Royals (12-8, 1-0), who snapped their own 28-game losing streak against Mater Dei (16-2, 1-1). Rosary's last win in the rivalry was 37-34 at Mater Dei on Jan. 19, 2006.
Asia Avinger, a San Diego State signee, contributed 15 points for Rosary, which broke a 50-50 tie to take the lead for good with four minutes remaining on the fourth 3-pointer of the night by Rodriguez.
Meaali'i Amosa scored 11 points for Mater Dei, which hadn't lost a league contest since a 40-34 setback at Orange Lutheran on Jan. 15, 2008.
Caia Elisaldez, Alyssa Frescas and Soleil Montrose each contributed nine points for the Monarchs, who hadn't dropped a league home game since a 44-42 loss to Santa Margarita on Jan. 8, 2008. It was also the first loss at Meruelo Athletic Center for Mater Dei since a 67-63 defeat against Windward in the CIF-Southern Section Open Division playoffs on Feb. 22, 2017.
Mater Dei used an 8-0 run, capped by two Amosa free throws, to take its only lead in the fourth quarter at 50-48 with 4:30 remaining, the first advantage for the Monarchs since 22-20 in the second quarter.
But Rosary, which received nine points from Caylee Santos, responded with seven unanswered points from Byon and Rodriguez to regain the momentum, as the Monarchs never got closer than three points the rest of the way.
Mater Dei still has an opportunity to share a league championship for the 13th year in a row with a victory Jan. 23 at Rosary's Karcher Center. The league has resumed playing two rounds this season after competing in only one round last year.
