: : : How important is it for a player to have a position identified? Player has been playing the point whole life. Now playing the 2, playing exceptionally well at the 2. Does it matter if player doesn't know if they are 1 or 2?

: : Yes and no.

: : Having the ability to play the 1 or the 2 is good to have.

: : While I believe the 1/PG is the leader on the court and has a job to run the offense and get everyone involved, that opinion is becoming the exception in today's position-less offenses.

: : In most cases now either guard is bringing the ball up and either is shooting from the wing. So it should be OK.

: : Bigger problem is if player has to play a post position but can never do that at the college level (if that is their goal). At the least, the coach should have these players practice wing work but most HS coaches don't care about that.

: In my opinion, since the really good teams press and have multiple presses I feel that it is important to have multiple ball handlers to deal with the pressure. If you have only one ball handler then you are in trouble. So I think it is important to try and make your guards a dual or triple threat with the ball. All guards should be able to shoot the 3, dribble penetrate to the hoop and pass the ball effectively. If a kid can do all three marginally then good. But guards that are one dimensional will not make it to the next level. The really good teams have multiple ball handlers and their guards can play the point and shoot the ball. Those kids are the ones college wants.

:: Being "just a guard" is not going to translate at the next level, especially if the girl is < 5'8". If you're that height - then you'd better identify yourself as a POINT guard - and play that position; doing all of the things the previous poster identified. There's a lot of kids in "limbo" because they're playing positions that their size/height don't really justify. I think it's very important to identify the right position - unless you've got some decent size/height.
