: How important is it for a player to have a position identified? Player has been playing the point whole life. Now playing the 2, playing exceptionally well at the 2. Does it matter if player doesn't know if they are 1 or 2?
Yes and no.
Having the ability to play the 1 or the 2 is good to have.
While I believe the 1/PG is the leader on the court and has a job to run the offense and get everyone involved, that opinion is becoming the exception in today's position-less offenses.
In most cases now either guard is bringing the ball up and either is shooting from the wing. So it should be OK.
Bigger problem is if player has to play a post position but can never do that at the college level (if that is their goal). At the least, the coach should have these players practice wing work but most HS coaches don't care about that.
