: Not surprising USA Today article on the shrinking numbers of high school basketball refs. Only two of ten refs return for a third year. Cited are abusive behavior by players, coaches and parents, age and pay. Once the current crop of refs retire, there's no one to replace them. Judging from how tough it is to get coach, it's conceivable that it will be impossible to get a ref in the coming years.
: Okay hotshots! The ones who are always on this board saying how badly the refs suck. Put that whistle around your fat necks and show us how it's done. We will surely grade you after you blow call after call.
Some takeaways - this mostly focuses on NY, but no doubt is true around the country.
NY seems to pay more than So Cal for refs.
One thing not mentioned, but I know for a fact to be true, is basketball officials are now migrating over to volleyball at a higher rate. Many do both, but if there is a weekend conflict, they are doing volleyball. Comparable if not better pay, less taxing physically, and while the parents there are still crazy, it is certainly not to the level of basketball.
Refs get torn apart on here regularly, and I know I have done it too. To me, the biggest issue is many refs can't keep up with the speed of the better teams. Then they start blowing excessive whistles to slow the game down to catch their breath.
Also, and this is on the assigners, is getting the best refs to the best games. This is essential on the girls side. When a "marquee" game gets refs that should really be doing low level varsity or JV games, but the game down the street between league cellar dwellers that ends up 30-24, there is an issue.
You want people to get interested in the girls game, but when people come to the top games, poor officials dominating/ruining the game make it so they don't want to come back.
While club events are a whole other issue, at least on the high school side the coaches and AD's need to work with the assigners to get better refs at better games, but on the school side, they need to control their fans much better. I guarantee you toss a few out-of-control parents out of games now and then things will settle down quickly.
