: Are all Nike Top Teams sponsored? If so, why is West Coast Premier requiring payment? A couple parents stated they are not paying and a few said they are.
It's because many clubs are quite shady, and the only way they can continue is to recruit top players. How do you recruit a top player? I guarantee that allowing them to play for free is number 1 on the list. That and the opportunity to play Nike EYBL, and the overused "exposure".
It's not coaching, development, etc. And any WCP or other club parent/player/coach that says otherwise is not being honest with themselves or with others. How much development or coaching can one do in 3 months? We all know it takes much longer than that to change the smallest thing about a player, especially one who already plays year round and has repeated, ingrained habits.
Clubs are about making money, making a name for their organisation. These girls getting D1 offers would get them regardless of which club they played for.
But the fact that some WCP players pay and others don't, and people are dumb enough to talk about it, just goes to show you how bizarre and unintelligent some of this stuff is.
