: : I have a question for all.
: : My daughter just ended her season last week and has been playing club for a few years. We are on a new team this season and we are getting pressure to begin practicing now because they want to play in a tournament this weekend. I have always been a firm believer in allowing her a couple weeks to rest her body and heal. I'd like to give her more than a couple of weeks, but that seems to be out of the question. lol
: : Most of my research seems to support that idea when hearing from "experts" and trainers.
: : What are some of your thoughts? I am going to stick by my guns, but i am curious if I am in the minority here.
: I agree completely you need to let them rest.
: If you just finished last week, that means the team was good and has probably been practicing/playing since last June. And she played club on top of that.
: When we finished two weeks ago, basically I shut my daughter down except for one training session a weeks and some shooting time. No games, no scrimmages, etc.
: Just starting that now.
: Some local tournament this weekend isn't worth it. Tell the coach she will come but not play and will start up next week.
I think it depends on the player and what level they played at, and how critical they were for their high school team.
If your kid was a frosh, JV, or varsity role player, I don't think they enough to warrant multiple weeks of rest. If they were a varsity starter playing heavy minutes...like they barely came out...yes, some rest is needed. But I think you need to take the club's schedule into account as well. If you're playing this weekend and then taking a long layoff until the next tournament, then that is the rest period.
Make sure you do what's best for your kid both basketball-wise and for their body.
