: If your child is playing competitive sports, this article is a MUST read.
:: I'm very happy that I NEVER did this my daughter. I would tell parents sometimes at these basketball games "Think about what you're doing to your daughter?" Sometimes (especially the Dad's) - they'd be ready to fight. Mind your own $#^% business! You just worry about your (sorry) daughter. Stuff like that.
Later - if I could manage it without being too obvious, I would whisper to the berated girl in passing, "you did a great job out there - keep it up!" Other times - when it was appropriate, I would say it in front of her family and friends.
What you "Basketball Dads" out there (and now some of the MOMs?) don't, but should realize? is that - your daughter feels BAD ENOUGH already when she missed the free throw that so-called "cost" the team the game. Or she got a pick set on her that enabled the winning 3 pointer. You don't have to punish them. They punish themselves. What YOU should be doing is providing (LIMITED) constructive feedback - and re-affirm her. Don't be an amplifier - be an insulator. Shield her. Protect her emotionally. Build her up.
And she will respond.
