Brackets are out and most predictions of teams were accurate as were most of seedings. Little bit of surprise at the bottom.
Anyway, here is my stab at the first round this Saturday
#1 Fairfax vs. #8 Legacy - This was the surprise, Leagcy getting 8. I figured them at 6. They played a good schedule and had some "good" losses to good teams. Lost to Fairfax by 9 in their tournament and I don't figure this game to go any different. The X-factor for Fairfax is always depth. They only really play 7 players, so if people get into foul trouble - especially Lair or Sembene - things could get interesting. Pick: Fairfax
#2 Palisades vs. # 7 Narbonne - good news for Narbonne is they are assured a state playoff game. Bad news is they are getting crushed by Palisades on Saturday. Narbonne is rebuilding well, and would probably tell you they are a year ahead of schedule. But they cannot stop Gibson and Williams. Look for the two of them to combine for 50-60 just from them which will be more than enough to win. If I was Narbonne, I would milk clock, be patient against press, and try to keep the game as low scoring as I could. Pick: Palisades
#3 El Camino Real vs. #6 Carson - Carson is a solid team with some nice pieces. They are mostly seniors so this is pretty much their year to make a run. Unfortunately, they are not as polished as El Camino. Led by Hamilton-Fisher, Jacks, and Okojie, ECR has the athleticism to counteract Carson. And their schedule has been brutal to prepare them for the playoffs. Pick: El Camino Real
#4 Granada Hills vs. #5 Eagle Rock - My friend thinks Eagle Rock has a shot at an upset here, but I don't see it. Eagle Rock is solid, and Granada hasn't played as tough a schedule as in year's past. But Granada doesn't make a lot of mistakes. They will not beat themselves. With Mitchell running the show, and a nice inside-out game with Salazar and Miranda, they can just wear you down and wait for you to make mistakes. If I'm Eagle Rock, I'm running a a lot and hoping my shooters are hot. Pick: Granada Hills
Will revisit this next Monday with Semi-final round.
Good luck to all the teams! I think any of the top four have a chance this year. I still think Pali wins it all, but the road is much harder this year.
