: : Based upon this week’s results so far, there are still 16 teams qualified for the 5AA playoffs. Two of the five teams on the fence were eliminated on Tuesday. St. Genevieve lost by 7 to St. Joseph of Lakewood and are now out, as is Calvary Chapel (Santa Ana), who finished fourth in their league and ended up under .500 overall.

: : Three bubble teams remain, Webb, Workman and Coachella Valley. I strongly project Webb and Workman to qualify. A Webb win tonight over Saddleback Valley Christian guarantees them a .500 record, regardless of their results with Avalon, which could put them in third place. Workman needs to defeat last place Azusa (who they defeated by 18 earlier) to put them over the .500 mark. A win gives them a chance to tie for third with a Nogales loss.

: : Coachella Valley is suddenly in danger of not qualifying. According to Max Preps, Coachella Valley forfeited three wins, two of them league wins from the first round of league play. They are now 9-13 overall. Their win on Tuesday over Rancho Mirage puts them one game behind R.M. Coachella plays last place Desert Mirage while Rancho has to play league leading Twentynine Palms. What is interesting is that Rancho Mirage has a nonleague game scheduled tonight with Xavier Prep with the 29P game scheduled for Friday. With the expected results, when would a Coachella Valley-Rancho Mirage third place playoff game happen?

: : A whopping 29 of the 48 teams in Division 5AA have now been eliminated. Chances are the playoff bracket will have eighteen teams, with 19 the maximum possible. If some crazy results happen, it could be 16 or 17…a very small number thanks to the .500 rule.

: Here are the 5AA Qualfied Teams:

: Buckley, Bishop Diego, California Lutheran, Calvary Chapel (Downey) Crean Lutheran, Heritage Christian, Hesperia Christian, La Reina, Mesa Grande Academy, Pasadena Poly, Pilibos, Rosemead, Rubidoux, St. Monica Academy, University Prep, Westridge.

And at the end of the day, people will say "this is what the coaches voted on".

Coaches vote in their own shortsighted self-interest. Most have no clue on how their decisions can wreck a good format.

Hopefully we go back to the 2016 format after the coming debacle.
