: : When making the brackets for the play-offs, what carries the most weight? Is it the SCIBCA rankings, or is it how you finish in your league? As I look through the divisions, I'm seeing teams that are 3rd place teams being ranked near the top of the division, and teams that are going to be league champions not being ranked in the top 15. Does winning your league only guarantee you a first round home game? Looking at 2AA for example. Bonita and Alta Loma aren't even ranked, but they could both be league champions. Santa Margarita is in a tough league, but they are a 5th place team.

: Read the Playoff Bulletin, it walks thru the process.

: They start by seeding the top 4 teams, then the second 4, third four and final four to make 16 seeds (taking into account the SCIBCA polls), then they place the remaining 1st place teams in leagues, then 2nd place teams, 3rd place teams, 4th place teams and finally at-large bids as long as space remains in the 32 team bracket. They try to make sure same league opponents are on opposite sides of the bracket but there are exemptions to that rule (travel).

Going with 2AA
Here is how it would play out

Step 1 - Determine how many playoff participants there are. First go with the # of auto qualifiers and then determine how many at-large bids are possible. The first two at-large bids would go to Santa Margarita & Ribet Academy for being ranked in the SCIBCA poll.

Step 2
Seed the top 4 (According to the SCIBCA Polls)
1. Rosary (Trinity #3)

4. Dos Pueblos (CHannel #2)

3. Rowland (Valle Vista #1)

2. Camarillo (Coastal Canyon #1)

no issues - all in different leagues

Step 3 Seed 5-8
1. Rosary (Trinity #3)
8. Arroyo Valley (San Andreas #1) - due to Santa Margarita being in the Trinity League, they'd probably move Arroyo Valley and Santa Margarita so two Trinity league teams would be on opposite sides of the bracket

5. Walnut (Hacienda #1) - or Los Altos depending on who wins tiebreaker
4. Dos Pueblos (Channel #2)

3. Rowland (Valle Vista #1)
6. Los Altos (Hacienda #2) - or Walnut depending on who wins tiebreaker

7. Santa Margarita (Trinity At-Large) - due to Santa Margarita being in the Trinity League, they'd probably move Arroyo Valley and Santa Margarita so two Trinity league teams would be on opposite sides of the bracket
2. Camarillo (Coastal Canyon #1)

Step 4 - Seed 9-12
1. Rosary (Trinity #3)

9. Downey (San Gabriel Valley #1T)
8. Arroyo Valley (San Andreas #1)

5. Walnut (Hacienda #1)
12. Twentynine Palms (De Anza #1)

4. Dos Pueblos (Channel #2)

3. Rowland (Valle Vista #1)

11.Temescal Canyon (Sunbelt #2)
6. Los Altos (Hacienda #2)

7. Santa Margarita (Trinity At-Large)
10. Tustin (Empire #1)

2. Camarillo (Coastal Canyon #1)

Step 5 - Seed teams 13-16

this is where is gets a little more interesting. JSerra is currently ranked #14 but will not be an auto qualifier and right now is under .500 so could not apply for an at-large bid so I will not include them but I do not know who would move up as I am not privy to the coaches votes and who is right outside the top 16 (I will just go with the highest remaining ranked team by MaxPreps - Bonita). Also Ribet Academy is a Freelance team which means if there happened to be 32 auto qualifiers, they could be left out of the bracket as at-large bids are given to fill the bracket. This actually happened to a team in Football this year, they were ranked by the coaches - had a great record but there was no room in the bracket for them.

1. Rosary (Trinity #3)
16. Bonita (Palomares #1)

9. Downey (San Gabriel Valley #1T)
8. Arroyo Valley (San Andreas #1)

5. Walnut (Hacienda #1)
12. Twentynine Palms (De Anza #1)

13. St. Monica Catholic (Camino Real #1)
4. Dos Pueblos (Channel #2)

3. Rowland (Valle Vista #1)
14. Arroyo Grande (Pac-8 #2)

11.Temescal Canyon (Sunbelt #2)
6. Los Altos (Hacienda #2)

7. Santa Margarita (Trinity At-Large)
10. Tustin (Empire #1)

15. Ribet Academy (Freelance At-large)
2. Camarillo (Coastal Canyon #1)

Step 6 - Take remaining League #1 teams and place them in the bracket

Alta Loma (Mt. Baldy #1)
Barstow (Desert Sky #1)
University (Pacific Coast #1)

my guess is these teams would host either Santa Margarita or Ribet Academy since both of those teams are At-Large bids and maybe Rosary a league #3, BUT here is where travel makes a little more decision when filling in teams who are not seeded. If there are multiple teams a league #1 could be filled in to play, they may account for travel and it would be a tough draw to be a league #1 and get assigned to host Rosary in round 1.

1. Rosary (Trinity #3)
University (Pacific Coast #1) - HOME TEAM

16. Bonita (Palomares #1)

9. Downey (San Gabriel Valley #1T)

8. Arroyo Valley (San Andreas #1)

5. Walnut (Hacienda #1)

12. Twentynine Palms (De Anza #1)

13. St. Monica Catholic (Camino Real #1)

4. Dos Pueblos (Channel #2)

3. Rowland (Valle Vista #1)

14. Arroyo Grande (Pac-8 #2)

11.Temescal Canyon (Sunbelt #2)

6. Los Altos (Hacienda #2)

7. Santa Margarita (Trinity At-Large)
Barstow (Desert Sky #1) - HOME TEAM

10. Tustin (Empire #1)

15. Ribet Academy (Freelance At-large)
Alta Loma (Mt. Baldy #1) - HOME TEAM

2. Camarillo (Coastal Canyon #1)

Step 7 - fill in league #2's
these teams would first be assigned games with other league #2's first and then onto league #1's.
If two league #2's play each other in the 1st round then a coin flip would determine who host in round one.

Step 8 - fill in league #3's
Step 9 - fill in any league #4 auto qualifiers
Step 10 - fill in At-Large Bids
