: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : Not bashing or anything just a serious question. Has OC basketball really fallen off this far? I've seen Mater Dei, Brea, Troy and a few other teams a number of times now and the quality of play is significantly down from recent years.
: : : : : : : : : : : : : : Basketball is most definitely not what it used to be. Although there are some really great players in OC, not sure those same players would have made it in back in the day. Problem is youth basketball... even though it has significantly increased over the last 10 years, the quality of players are not what they used to be! A lot of players are also dual sport athletes meaning they are not putting in enough work in one sport to be ELITE in said sport!
: : : : : : : : : : : : : Maybe fundamentals should be taught in travel ball instead of run and gun and mugging on defense
: : : : : : : : : : : : Travel ball is not a time for fundamentals, It's for a quick paced game and players that aren't ready for that type of play shouldn't be exposed to those conditions.
: : : : : : : : : : : WHAT????
: : : : : : : : : : Travel ball is a joke. My daughter started playing in 5th grade and it has been nothing but full court muggings ever since. Girls are not strong enough with the ball to withstand the pressure, nor are they strong enough to throw the deep diagonal pass that is always open. It's become a predator/pray game. Girls have no clue what to do in the half court and if they did, they never get to apply it because of the relentless pressure. Been watching this for four years now and I've only seen a handful of teams that are well versed in the fundamentals of an offense. Girls not playing hoops?--maybe it's because coaches press the fun out of it. Stay in the half court until they are 13, then let them press.
: : : : : : : : : : As for ELITE players, what a tired cliche that is. How many travel teams do you see with the word ELITE in their titles. No wonder everyone hates millennials--what kind of false sense of self are we giving them by gluing ELITE on their jerseys. I have seen many quality players who could practice 8 hours a day and never become ELITE, and I've seen many ELITES miss countless layups. If I asked you to name 5 Elite college players, I bet you could. I also bet none of the girls on your daughters' teams are in their league. Jersey should say (Team Name + pretty good for our area). Elite? Please.
: : : : : : : : : You are so correct. Above Post. Being directly involved on both sides in coaching and training I see team with Elite somewhere on the jersey and nothing about the team is elite nor the program. Too many teams sit in a 2-3 zone, or a 2-2-1 Trap and thrive on playing "Hope" defense in a 2-3, "I hope they dont shoot the ball well" or they play 2-2-1 to create chaos. I am not against a press but both of these defenses teach zero MAN to MAN concepts. If your program cant or wont teach MAN then your program IS NOT ELITE.
: : : : : : : : : If you want to get a pretty true indication of what a club is about before you sign up ask this "QUESTION" , "What do you guys do when its a big lead or a big deficit with ample time left?" Watch how this will most likely tie a knot in their brain. If you dont hear words like DEVELOP, or DIFFERENTIATE then RUN LIKE HELL. You see loads of teams scoring the same way in the last 15 minutes of a blow put that they did when they first started the game. Why not use the 15 minutes of GAME TIME to shuffle the deck. Move your roster around , you may only win by 10 after that instead of 30 but who cares. Anyone that puts winning above development at any level of youth sports is not conscious enough to be a true ELITE coach. I see they handful of clubs teach how to compete and how to play the game the right way. And when a game is out of hand they shuffle to continue development.
: : : : : : : : Do you ever see a girl in articles for how many times she dove for a ball or how many times she denied her man from getting the ball? No not ever. You only here about the girls who come from big schools who score big points. Travel ball has lost its value , its more about the coaches ego and the scoreboard rather than helping THEIR players to get better.
: : : : : : : The Elite Coaches lose every game because they are developing players. The non-elite crappy coaches win every game because they do so at all costs of developing the youngsters.
: : : : : : we need better coaching on the girl's side of the sport, both on the club and high school levels. it's at an all-time low.
: : : : : The subject was has the play in the OC gone down. IMO, yes. Not sure why club teams came up. Still if you want to see a club team teach their players how to run about 15 different sets go watch a Cal Swish mid week work out. Fundamentals are not taught at most AAU teams, they are there for group exposure to college coaches. If your players are coachable and can run plays coaches feel they can work with the player.
: : : : : The 3 OC programs mentioned above used to recruit and get really high level talent. Watching the better players on the teams this year is pretty sad compared to what it used to be. They are no where near the level of past players even in recent years. I was shocked watching some of the games this year.
: : : : Mater Dei, Brea, and Troy each have one outstanding player this year. It used to be each one of these programs had multiple quality players.
: : The biggest problem with HS sports and college sports in general the last 5 years or so is political correctness...coaches can't coach 100% because of a fear of hurting someone's feelings and zapping the concept of competing by worm AD's and principals who have allowed parents to dictate to them how they should run their athletic programs...you see very good coaches leaving every year because of it and because of these non backbone administrators who give them no support...my god coaches are told ld not to mention GPA's at the end of season banquets because it might offend someone...with all that being said, the term "work ethic" and being "coachable" are pretty much non existent...players and parents don't get the fact you have to actually put in work to get better...there's no magician with a wand...because of the culture these days, we may never see girls bball as a whole be the way it was until parents and players realize criticism, competion and expectations are a way of real life.
: : Excellent points
Really not worth coaching High School Team for a couple thousand dollars to put up with parents, who all think their kid is great, but isn't being used correctly, that the coach doesn't know what they're doing, yada, yada, yada and why Coaches don't last more than a few years and you have to have something wrong with you to Coach nowadays.
