: : : What y'all thoughts on the teams in the open division watchlist?

: : Antelope Valley just made the list

: First of all, too many teams on this list.

: Personally, I think this is a good year to only have 12 teams, but we all know CIF won't pass on the $$$

: A couple of examples of list being too big:

: Antelope Valley? Not a chance. 1 win vs. a good team (Canyon - which isn't even ranked), no wins or even losses vs. elite teams (best loss is to Granada Hills). Sorry, not making it.

: Village Christian? Uh, no. Good team in lower division. No big wins. Played two good teams - Fairfax and El Camino - and got blown out in both. Should win 4AA though.

: Teams not in 1AA that aren't named Fairmont Prep. There are some really good teams in 1A and 2AA - for example Rosary beat Ventura the other day. I like Camarillo too. But just because they put it all together and beat an elite team, doesn't mean they should go to Open.

: I would figure the list will shrink each week. And while parents get excited their kid's team is on the watch list, I bet most of their coaches want to no part of it.

The only positive for being in the OPEN (if you aren't going to win it) is you are guaranteed a state berth (teams that go 0-2 in OPEN drop to D2 for state).

Unfortunately, with the new SS system, Divisions 3-4 suffer because No Cal doesn't bring their best teams up --- Cardinal Newman is a legit Open team for the North, but they kept them in D4 last year to specifically win the state title..

AV does not want Open, just like Esperanza does not want Open, just like many 1AA teams don't want Open ---- but 16 have to go.... the MDs, Alemany, Oaks, HW, Chaminades, etc. of the world want Open because they recruit to be at that level... except for LBP (which is a small city in and of itself), I imagine most publics don't want Open...

With competitive equity you can already see some teams scheduling down to hit the .500 requirement for playoffs... However, most scheduling for this year was already done so teams didn't have too much control over their CIF "power rankings" but you can best be assured that next year coaches will be "working" the system to set themselves up for the division they want....
