: : So once you get outside of the top divisions you have a lot of teams that have differing records. Some only have one or two losses while others are hovering around .500.

: : When people vote in the coaches poll what should be of the most value when you do not have head to head results to compare?

: : Do I value "quality" losses (is there such a thing) over some wins?

: : What about a team that has a quality record (.750 or above) but a BAD loss or two?

: : I'll be honest with you, having 40 teams in a division that do not play a lot of common opponents is difficult to assess.

: : Also what about a team that has been playing without a top rotational player (maybe a starter), how much do I take that into account when ranking them? Do I rank them based on their results (kind of like a computer), or on what they maybe capable of?

: : I am not impressed with the MaxPreps rankings this year but ranking teams is not an easy thing.

: The answer is "all of the above".

: There is no cut and dry answer I'm afraid.

: I would value a competitive loss to a good team more than a blowout win over a cupcake.

: Getting a rotational player, either by return from injury or transfer has to be considered and as the next few weeks progress, should show in that team's results.

: As for a BAD loss - there are factors to consider. Did they get killed? Or did they lose a close game to a team they should have beaten? Were they missing players (injury, vacation, illness, etc.)? Was it a fifth game in five days? This is hard to value as it is probably hard to figure out circumstances. Also, maybe it was just a bad game - everyone has one now and again.

: Unless you can see all the teams play, it will really be hard to do a true ranking. But you can try to get close.

I am a voting coach in a middle division. We have designed spreadsheets that assign value to each and every game. We then discuss good wins and good losses.. example if a D3 defeats any D1 that is a good win (granted all D1s are not the same). If a D4 played a D2 to within 10 points but lost, that would be a good loss. We have a power rating (albeit imperfect, but a great tool), look at W/L and watch video. I have about 75% of teams above .500 in my division. Then we use comparables (again imperfect, but a measure to be sure). I guess what I'm saying is that some of us do take the ranking process very seriously. In some divisions, only a handful of coaches vote. No one is forced to vote but in a division of 50+ teams, you hope more would vote. A lot of misplacements will work themselves out over the next few weeks.
