: : : Is it safe to assume that any team in 3a and below with a .500 or better record will get an at-large bid this year? It doesn't seem like there will be 32 teams with .500 records in most of these lower divisions? What else could I be missing?

: : : Thanks.

: : Not missing anything, hence why 3A and some below it are 50+ teams while higher divisions have less teams

: I honestly think they will change that as playoff time gets near. So many of the divisions wont have more than 15-20 teams and that is a loss for CIF $$.

That is if schools even apply. During the 2015 Cif Div 4AA playoffs their were 9 first round byes. 9!!! Why? Because no one applied to the playoffs, even though all you had to do was apply to get in.

So even if you get rid of the 500 exemption, you will still need schools willing to apply, and some will have such bad records they won't apply. Which is what happened in 2015, the division was so bad beyond team 15 that no one saw the point of applying to lose by 80 in the first round.

I had hoped that the new divisions would bring more competitiveness to the playoffs where teams will be more evenly matched across each division.

Matter of fact, because some of the leagues are so imbalanced you will have teams ranked in the top 15 of their division, but due to their league not finish in the top 3. Because they lost most of their league games, they won't be 500 so the won't be eligible for the playoffs. For instance Serra needs to win 5 of the last 13 games to make the playoffs as at at large bid, they might not get that and miss the playoffs despite being one of the top 32 teams in the division.
