The Southern Section covers quite a large area. I think it is close to 400 miles from two of the furthest schools on each end (Lee Vining to Paso Robles - difficult to cross the Sierra Nevadas in the Winter). Granted we do not all live 400 miles away from all the schools in our division, but there is a lot of space in between us and it is next to impossible to see all schools. With all that being said, what do you think is a reasonable way of reporting scores to each other and what do you think should be expected of coaches within the section on reporting their results?
With the next coaches' poll coming up this next Monday I try to keep an eye on all the teams in the division and how they are doing but it amazes me that coaches and their teams that I know are going to the playoffs do not update their schedules or results on the CIFSS Home website or MaxPreps (many many less teams use the CIFSS Home website during the season - so MaxPreps is probably the best resource). In the event that teams are missing scores or games scheduled on these sites I try my best to scavenge the local newspapers online but that could be very hit or miss (and more and more newspapers online are reverting to a limited number of free views per month so that limits that way of searching).
I guess in the end I am thinking, should I penalize these teams in my coaches poll for not reporting their scores and assume they loss the game (granted I hear the 1AA teams don't want to be in the top 16)? Should coaches be required to report their scores and where should we be looking? How long should I expect for a coach to report a score (two days, three days, a week, two weeks, a month)?
It is already a little difficult to keep up with all of the teams, even more so when you get the coach who thinks not listing their games or results gives them an advantage for being "under the radar." - Just trying to do my job and hoping others would do the same.
