: : LANCASTER - The Antelope Valley girls defeated Burroughs 58-18 for the second year in a row to claim the Antelope Valley Annual Holiday Classic Tournament championship.
: : The girls hoisted their trophy and posed for pictures Friday night, after an amazing five-day tournament run. The Lady Lopes (11-1) outscored their opponents 317-105 and their smallest margin of victory came by a whopping 37 points. The team's harassing defense played a huge part in every game and after the tournament, coach Deon Price was proud of his girls.
: : "Honestly, it feels really good," Price said. "At the end of the day there's always someone that may have a better day than you did that day. Luckily for us, today we were a little bit better. We made better plays, we had more things go to our advantage and it worked out for us."
: : Senior Tatyana Lyles was selected MVP of the tournament - she was the MVP last year as well - and Savannah Sullivan and Niyah Page were selected All-Tournament. Oriana Brown and Tyler Smith were honorable mentions.
: : "It feels good to let my team know that they trust in me," Lyles said. "It feels good to be MVP."
: : Burroughs (10-2) came out and immediately hit the brick wall of traps AV sets. The Burros looked stunned by the fast pressure they faced every time they touched the ball and, as a result, started to play fast on offense. The fast offense led to turnovers, rushed shots and mistakes on dribbles to create space.
: : They quickly found themselves down double digits and didn't score a point until there was 3:30 left in the first quarter. The relentless defense got under Burroughs guard Hailey Dugan when she picked up a technical foul for throwing an elbow. She was swarmed by defenders near the baseline and was unhappy when a foul wasn't called.
: : It was no shocker that AV's team defense would be the shining star of the game. The Lady Lopes had a 15-5 lead after the first quarter and six different players had already scored.
: : "We were able to impose our defense on them early and it kind of got things rattled and started to make things a lot easier for us," Price said.
: : Burroughs handled AV's pressure defense better in the second quarter by sending two and three girls into the backcourt to help after a double team. It worked to get them some more opportunities, but they also struggled shooting the ball.
: : Burroughs coach Laura Larson said her team was tired after playing five games in four days and a slew of injuries had them hampered. Larson's team trailed 31-12 at halftime after Hunter Boske hit a buzzer beater to close out the second quarter.
: : "We didn't execute correctly, our defense was lacking in zone and we just weren't aggressive enough," Dugan said.
: : The second half saw AV adjust to Burroughs' offense in the backcourt. They used the length of Oriana Brown, S'Coya Sulaiman and Angel Jackson against the smaller Burrough guards. Burroughs couldn't pass over the top and many tipped passes turned into easy layups for the Lady Lopes.
: : AV continued to stretch the lead with its defense and entered the fourth quarter up 43-18. The Burros looked gassed towards the end of the game and didn't register a single point in the fourth quarter. AV reached their biggest lead of the game - 40 - with under a minute to play.
: : Lyles had a game-high 13 points, Sullivan had 12 points and Smith finished with 10. Page finished with nine points and had a big mark on the defensive end.
: : "It feels good to be able to keep our winning streak going and win in our own house and keep our championship," Page said.
: : Frontier 49, Desert 43, OT
: : Frontier clawed back from a 17-point defecit and took home third place by defeating Desert 49-43 in an overtime thriller.
: : Desert (6-4) had a 14-9 lead at halftime in a game where both teams struggled shooting the ball early on. Desert's Asia Mallory put up all eight of their first quarter points and had a team-high 24 points.
: : Antelope Valley, please stop hyping yourselves up! Only you guys alone believe your own hype.
