: : : : : Why does the CIF set the divisions BEFORE the season. Doesn't it make sense to form the divisions after the first 1/2 of league? Gives them about 2-3 weeks prior to get it right. Takes into account teams that graduate a handful of key players, would factor in injuries etc. Most teams are what they are and at this point in the season.

: : : : : MAKES ZERO SENSE to place teams into divisions prior. The FREEMAN rating was RIGHT ON when it was used. Why can't CIF find a FORMULA that works and includes some common sense?????

: : : : : .500 rule is WHACKED too!!!!!! Say you are pit into a league like the MISSION with HW / CHAMINADE / Alemany - 3 potential OPEN TEAMS = 0-6. You would have to schedule cream puffs to get to .500 which in turn doesn't prepare you for teams of that caliber. Its a JOKE!

: : : : Agree should be maxpreps final rankings. Why is CIF partners with Maxpreps if they're not going to use them?

: : :
: : : Can't simply use MaxPreps either. There are always issues with them, from early in the season to later.

: : :Exactly. The divisions should be set right before league starts in January. They should use the maxpreps rankings as well as SCIBCA to rank every school. The coaches will know who got transfers, who graduated their best players from the year before, who got incoming ninth grade studs and they can set the divisions then...much more accurately.

: I would say the reason for the formula and making the divisions before the season starts is to avoid coaches manipulating the system. As is, coaches can't really do anything to sway the system unless they just tank for two years.

: IF they decided to do the divisions in January, coaches could intentionally sit kids or straight up try to lose games for a softer division at the end of the season. Another version of this would to play in tournaments and non league games against teams they can't beat. So they would get good practice, lots of losses, a poor division placement, then get top half in league and go to the playoffs and have a possible CIF Championship.

: Other thing mentioned was a "little common sense" which won't ever work. As soon as you add a human element to the picking of divisions, you have opinions. Those opinions, regardless of who is making them, is biased. Adding a human element just doesn't work.

: No system is perfect, but as is, this is one of the best systems I have seen in the last ten years since I have been doing this.

I would agree with this except I would add a committee to pick Open. If the computer rankings work for the most part, getting the 12 or 16 Open teams right should make everything else work best too.

But the committee actually needs to put a little effort in to see the "top teams" which I don't think is that hard - Palisades tourney, Redondo tourney, Troy tourney, a couple showcases, a couple big non-league games.
