: : : : : : : Your thoughts?

: : : : : : You first

: : : : : Rarely, if ever is it the kids fault. So, no do not punish them. But, maybe the parents! LOL. If a kid can play, they can play.

: : : : Rare in the girls HS Hoops game to see holdbacks, more common I've noticed that parents allow their younger aged kids to play up so to speak. For example, know plenty of varsity starters that graduate at 17 and don't even turn 18 until the last 4 months of that graduation year. Had they not started school early or started school 2 YEARS LATER (aka holdback 1 year)!!! Peeps would be like she's a super soph.

: : : Was Brooke Demetre held back?

: : There are several high profile players, that will be 19-20 years old when they graduate, that were held back. However itís not entirely clear if they were held back for basketball purposes or if there was possiblebly an academic need. Furthermore it usually happens at the elementary level, rarely on the girls side during middle school.

: It's more common on the boys side due to boys' growth spurts happening in late teens.

: And yes Demetre is a hold back.

While of course there are girl hold backs, the number vs. boys is very, very low.

And for girls, it is usually (not always, but usually) for other reasons - academic, social, etc. It also usually happens very young - usually in elementary school.

For boys, it is usually (not always, but usually) for sports. Due to late growth spurts and puberty hitting later. And it usually happens in middle school (7th/8th grade) when parents realize little Johnny is too small for high school sports.

You can debate the merits of it all day, but it will not change.

Even adjusting the cut-off date for high school sports will just mean more prep schools.
