: People like to glorify the Open champion. That's fine, they really are the single best team in the state. However, it's not the only state championship, and in some ways it's not the best state championship.

: This year I'd say it goes to Caruthers High School in Division 5. Caruthers is a small town up in the San Joaquin Valley. About 2,400 people. While it's not as down-and-out as the now more famous neighbor MacFarland, Caruthers has been suffering greatly due to the drought and its effect on agriculture.

: After the girl's basketball team won State a week ago, the town had a parade for the players. Marching band, had the players up on a tractor trailer, several hundred people came out to watch.

: Coming from a small town, I understand what high school sports means to many. They're something that brings the community together. Part of the history of the town.

: These girsl weren't all-stars, they were the girls who had been growing up in that small town. Probably half the town either knew a player, or their parents or a sibling. People who grew up there and moved away followed this team and were excited by their championship and expressed it on social media.

: So while the other divisions certainly have more talent, I think the Blue Raiders from Caruthers won the best state championship this season.

Growing up in a small town in central California, I totally agree with you. Very well said!
