: Cif has posted a message regarding school fees and increasing them. Here is a part of what is said:

: The primary factor behind the decision to increase sport fees in fulfilling our responsibilities to submit a balanced budget for next year, we could no longer ignore the significant
: decline in attendance at our championships that we have experienced over the past
: four years. Specifically, ticket sales have gone down from 603,391, during the 2014-2015
: school year, to 457,321 during the 2017-2018 school year. That translates to approximately 50,000 less tickets sold
: each year and results in a dramatic loss of revenue for our organization and for our membership. Also, with our
: 2018-2019 Fall Championships completed, we are already approximately 25,000 less tickets sold this year than
: where we were last year at this time.

: My Question is this - Do you believe the competitive equity that cif is using is a direct link to lack of fans at championship games. Looking at the 2014 season which was the first year of this we can see in division team are not moved to the point they are now. If you look at the teams in division 1 and division 2 they make up the teams of the past that were fighting it out for divisional titles. More division were contested and had quality Talent that fans wanted to see.
: In today's cif divisions you can't say that. I believe that teams that would be in lower divisions like in 2013 would win multiple games bring fans to every game. Now in division 1 you have all the top teams and opening rounds or second round games are better then the other division championships, and thus fans don't care about other divisions. The lack of ticket sales support this.

: If you look at the 2013 season we had no Open division and did not move teams so we had Windward and Serra playing for a Div 4AA title and Alemany and Chaminade playing in Div 3aa/a for titles and you still had a strong finals in div 1aa and div 1a.

: I believe the same could be said in football and on the boys side of basketball.

: CIF wanted pizza and trophies for everyone so they created this monster division and now they are crying because the fans are not coming out to support. In the end schools have to pay more and attendance will continue to drop.

: Curious how others see this.

I would be interested to know the breakdown by sport. Is basketball contributing to the decline or is it not? Just from a personal anecdote I felt like there were less people at the past few girls championships than in the past. But my observation might not fit with the actual facts. With ticket sales down 25K from the fall that is obviously a football issue.
