The marquee game of the annual Burroughs Showcase, featuring a pair of ranked teams in CIF-Southern Section Division 1, didn't disappoint Saturday with Serra (11-6) holding on for victory as Camarillo's potential tying 3-pointer missed in the final seconds.
Two of the state's top freshmen were each significant contributors for their respective teams, with Camarillo's Gabriela Jaquez scoring 22 points and Serra's Jailah Donald recording 19 points, 11 rebounds and four steals.
Senior Alexis Tucker, a Texas Tech signee, led Serra with 32 points, 15 rebounds, four assists and three steals. The Cavaliers led 69-62 with two minutes remaining, before Camarillo (18-4) rallied behind junior Alyssa Marin and Jaquez to cut the deficit to three with nine seconds left.
Following two missed free throws by Serra, which shot 15 of 31 from the line overall, Camarillo had a final opportunity to force overtime, but a 3-point attempt by Jaquez from the left wing fell short as time expired.
Marin scored 18 points and Telyssa Samuel added 11 points for Camarillo, which led 52-45 in the third quarter, before Serra scored 11 unanswered points. Although Camarillo tied the score twice in the fourth quarter, Serra never trailed again.
Junior Eleni Cabrera scored seven points for Serra, which plays Tuesday in an important Del Rey League matchup at Bishop Montgomery (15-4). Camarillo plays Wednesday against Simi Valley (12-9) in a first-place showdown in the Coastal Canyon League.
