: : : : : I noticed that the Christmas break seams to be busy (Games,Tournaments, etc.) for high school basketball teams. This is my daughters first year on Varsity and her coach gave the team this entire Christmas week off. No games, no practice, nothing. At first I was I was kind of happy that they had the week off but not so sure now. Is it normal for a varsity basketball team to take the Christmas break off or should I be worried?
: : : :
: : : : The question would be why did they give them the week off?
: : : : Maybe some players were going on vacation? You would think you know you are going to be playing during the break but some parents don't care. And if you are missing key players, it is an even more obvious reason.
: : : : Especially if you are at a SS school. With the .500 rule, it's hard to play in a four game tourney if you are missing some key players and take the chance of getting some L's.
: : : There are many Elite tourneys this week and last week. If your HS is off this week, they are probably not good this year and will never be good. If your kid is looking to play at a high level, transfer ASAP. If you live in the area and love the academics and bball is just for "fun", then don't worry about it and just be happy your kid will be on varsity all her years there.
: : Don't worry about it. It's one week. Enjoy the time with your loved ones.
Our team played tournaments the first two weeks of the season this year since CIF moved the start of the season to the week before Thanksgiving. Due to this, we are not playing in a tournament this week for the first time in years.
I believe several teams are in this boat. Our school district also told everyone the schools are dead from 12-23 until 1-2 and we aren’t supposed to use the facility. As you can surmise, our district doesn’t give two cents worth about athletics.
While we are not an “elite” team by this boards definition, we have managed to make a CIF Final the last couple of years and develop a program that has produced 8 collegiate players the last 3 years. We practiced, had a gift exchange and last night watched 3 of those players win their college game
and then take them out to dinner.
So no I wouldn’t worry too much if your daughters team misses a week over the holidays because there are probably multiple reasons behind the scenes. We are looking at it as a rejuvenating and team bonding time as we prepare to make a run at another league title and hopefully some CIF victories.
Have a blessed vacation and there should be plenty of places for your daughter to dribble for an hour a day, make a 100 FT, make a 100 opposite hand layups, work on post moves or shoot 3 pointers... God Bless...
