: : Since the Daily News no longer really gives any coverage to girl's basketball, here's a stab at what at Top 10 would look like for their coverage area.

: : Week 3 - November 29

: : 1. Sierra Canyon (4-0) - Far and away top team. Nice games coming up: Orangewood, Alemany, ECR, Serra
: : 2. Alemany (7-1) - Biggest mover with some nice wins over LJCD, Brea, Centennial. Next week has Sierra, ECR, Serra
: : 3. Harvard Westlake (3-2) - The potential with the big girl is there. Keep watching, they will keep improving. In Burroughs tourney next week.
: : 4. Granada Hills (3-1) - Was loss to Valencia a fluke or maybe there has been too much hype? Has Crescenta Valley tomorrow and Burroughs tourney next week.
: : 5. Chaminade (1-3) - Win against Valencia, loss to Narbonne. Need some wins in Burroughs tourney next week.
: : 6. El Camino Real (1-1) - Has Ventura tonight in Brentwood tourney. Up next week: Sierra Canyon, Alemany, Serra.
: : 7. Valencia (2-4) - Nice win over Granada. If it wasn't a fluke, look out Foothill League.
: : 8. Saugus (6-1) - Nice win over Foothill Tech, other than that, not a challenging schedule.
: : 9. Crescenta Valley (3-3) - Good game vs. Granada tomorrow, then nothing exciting for a couple of weeks until they play Burroughs.
: : 10. Burroughs (6-0) - 3 wins vs. Hawaiian teams, so hard to gauge. Hosting annual tourney next week.

: : Others: Birmingham (4-3), Canyon (3-1)

: : Props to those teams that went to Redondo tourney to take on the best comp.

: : Some good games this week in Sierra Canyon tourney with Sierra, Alemany, ECR, and Serra.

: : Burroughs tourney is next week also, hopefully some top teams there too.

: : Hopefully, there will be civil, rational discussions on the pros and cons of each team or any I may have missed. Looking for a little more than "Team X sucks" or "Team Y should be there".

: : Here's to a great season, full of exciting games and no injuries!

: Some teams that we should add to the discussion, since they typically play each other in tourneys or scheduled games and will never be included in OC or SGV type lists --> I think Camarillo & Marlborough & Brentwood would potentially bump out a few of the listed Top 10. They would definitely replace Birm and Canyon (sorry, but if you have seen them play live, you would be nodding in agreement) in the outside looking in list. No offense but using the Transitive property: HW & Chaminade(move up) beat Valencia by a lot, Valencia beat GH(move down) in a nail biter. HW Beat ElCo in a close game. ElCo needed a banked 40ft to win over St Paul but they may have a trf play after SOP or maybe she just sits having already signed to play in college and just does the training route (have seen it before). Good stuff so far right. Looking forward to more games.

Your original premise is correct. This is supposed to be for the Daily News coverage area. Brentwood, Marlbourough, and Camarillo are not in their area (as was the case with Ribet last year).

Newbury Park is the cutoff. So Camarillo would be in a VC Star list, Marlbourough and Brentwood can be in the regional Times' lists.

And I do not necessarily subscribe to the "A beat B but lost to C" etc. Anything can happen on a given day.

For example, if Alemany wins a close game at Sierra next week, are they better? I wouldn't necessarily say so. What happened in that game? Did someone get hurt? Did bad calls take a key player out of game? Was someone sick? Now if they were to win by 20, that's another story.

I kind of go with if they played right now on a neutral court, who would win? And that opinion is based on how a team is playing for the season/recently, not just "last night" if that makes sense.

At this point, I would really tier the teams likes this:

Tier 1 - Sierra
Tier 2 - Alemany, HW
Tier 3 - Granada, Nade, ECR
Tier 4 - Valencia, Saugus, CV, Burroughs

My thinking is you should beat a lower tier, lose to a higher tier, and any game in your tier should be competitive one way or the other.

As far as I know, only ECR is getting transfer help in January among these teams. That is not figured into this list. After she is eligible, and they play a couple of games with her, their ranking may move up.
