: My take - and this is for all of So Cal not just OC - is that the top talent is better than ever, but there is much less depth than even the last couple of years.
: If you look at the TOP players - they are definitely more skilled than ever. They shoot better, they have better handles, have more moves. You can argue IQ, but I think that is due to youth coaching/philosophies - that's a topic for another day.
: But depth-wise - the talent just isn't there. The number of "really good" and "good" players is down. It's almost like a girl who would have been "good" a few years ago is now "very good", and girls who would have been just "OK" are now "good".
: With all the club, you have to ask why is this? Part of it is there are too many club teams/directors in it just for the money and not for actually teaching basketball. They collect their fees and stick kids in local tourneys where they can dominate and beat up over similar teams. I'm not saying all - but certainly too many.
: Or they just teach them how to press and shoot threes or go one on everyone to the hole. Again, a topic for another day, but eliminate the 3-ball and zone before high school and let's see these "fee collector" clubs survive.
: The other issue, and this has been brought up before, is not as many girls are playing basketball in general, and this is really true at the elite athlete level. Girls who would have played hoops a few years ago are now playing volleyball (especially) and LAX. There are reasons for each, but many people don't acknowledge them.
: Another consequence of this will be an even greater trend to the haves and have-nots of high school teams. You can already see a pretty big drop off in the various CIF divisions, and that will only get worse as there are less ELITE players. They will tend to gravitate towards each other, much as they do at club teams.
: There are also rumblings of major changes in recruiting - possibly mirroring those of the boys. And if that happens, I can see an even bigger shift to super teams in HS.
: Until these issues are addressed, the trend will just continue.
I think soccer has really taken a lot of girls out of other sports, and volleyball has also taken girls from basketball. Not sure I see a lot of kids leaving basketball for Lacrosse. Both soccer and volleyball are much more organized than basketball is and offer better coaching from a young age. Young girls who want to play basketball are forced to play with boys or in SEYO or rec ball until almost high school. Other sports are locking kids in at younger ages.
But why does OC basketball suck in particular? Let's face it, OC has a lot of white upper middle class kids whose parents don't want to drive to lynwood and south central for basketball games. Look at the local clubs in OC: Rhythm, JSK, Monster Game, Next Level/Sparks south - they're all a joke and softer than charmin. Watch some of their games and listen to the entitled parents who think their money can buy wins.
It doesn't change much when the kids get to high school. J Serra and Rosary can give you a decent game but they are the bridesmaids of the Trinity league. Brea, OLU, Troy are just shadows of their former selfs. After MD, Fairmont, Orangewood and Los Al there's not much left. Don't even start me on Huntington Beach.
