: : Such truth--finally being spoken!! Too many entitled kids with parents whom believed they have already made it so they do nothing to improve their game. Some hire trainers only to get into games and find themselves unable to play with four other players on their team, just too much one on one. They find themselves unable to read helpside defense. Then on offense they shoot 35 times and score 15 points and the crowd erupts, leaving many of us in the stands that know real basketball to sit there thinking "WHATT? We are really cheering for shot attempts and not makes?" We need to pull these kids aside and tell them the truth. It is so hard to watch games now, even at some elite levels. And these high school games are just beyond unwatchable, post players with no post moves, guards with no vision, shooting guards who are unable to shoot unless they take 35 attempts. Something needs to be done ASAP!
: ...Easy there. Maybe yall watching too much summer ball where neubs are just trying to find their way in the varsity level. Still plenty of good ones getting schollys and leading their schools the right way. Can one really say the talent and skill is worse today than 5 or 10 years ago? I have to say there is more depth today but the same amount of top line talent moving onto college hoops.
My take - and this is for all of So Cal not just OC - is that the top talent is better than ever, but there is much less depth than even the last couple of years.
If you look at the TOP players - they are definitely more skilled than ever. They shoot better, they have better handles, have more moves. You can argue IQ, but I think that is due to youth coaching/philosophies - that's a topic for another day.
But depth-wise - the talent just isn't there. The number of "really good" and "good" players is down. It's almost like a girl who would have been "good" a few years ago is now "very good", and girls who would have been just "OK" are now "good".
With all the club, you have to ask why is this? Part of it is there are too many club teams/directors in it just for the money and not for actually teaching basketball. They collect their fees and stick kids in local tourneys where they can dominate and beat up over similar teams. I'm not saying all - but certainly too many.
Or they just teach them how to press and shoot threes or go one on everyone to the hole. Again, a topic for another day, but eliminate the 3-ball and zone before high school and let's see these "fee collector" clubs survive.
The other issue, and this has been brought up before, is not as many girls are playing basketball in general, and this is really true at the elite athlete level. Girls who would have played hoops a few years ago are now playing volleyball (especially) and LAX. There are reasons for each, but many people don't acknowledge them.
Another consequence of this will be an even greater trend to the haves and have-nots of high school teams. You can already see a pretty big drop off in the various CIF divisions, and that will only get worse as there are less ELITE players. They will tend to gravitate towards each other, much as they do at club teams.
There are also rumblings of major changes in recruiting - possibly mirroring those of the boys. And if that happens, I can see an even bigger shift to super teams in HS.
Until these issues are addressed, the trend will just continue.
