: : It's been quiet on the UCLA front because their head coach has interviewed for the open Virginia coaching spot. There were rumors she was going to head to Texas Tech but it was just rumors, no interview, no interest. Virginia is a different story. Comparable academics to UCLA, better women's basketball history. Close's contract is up and Virginia will offer much better money, even with a raise from UCLA. Prepared to offer over 700k, so that would be almost 2x what UCLA pays. They took Joanne Boyle from Cal which didn't work out and took Bennett from WSU which did.

: : I think if they offer, Close leaves. She saw the graduation of Canada and Billings, which was a highlight for her and would likely see less production in the coming years because of weaker recruiting.

: Unless she can't stomach living in Virginia, and she is offered the job, she should jump on it.

: More money, cheaper cost of living, better tradition for women's hoops.

: Not to mention next year's team is going to take a big step back.

: It's a big win for her if she goes.

: It's also a win for UCLA, who can go another direction without being the school who didn't rehire coach that went to Elite 8.

: If they pick the right coach, they can get good again quickly as the better players will no longer fear going there and not getting much better.

Nikki Caldwell left UCLA on a high but with a weak group of players. She took double the money at LSU but was also offered Virginia. Virginia took Cal's Joanne Boyle. Close is off an Elite Eight high but has also had problems living up to her #1 class of four years ago. She might be offered Virginia at double the money. It also helps that she has not had her contract renewed so there would be no buyout.

Caldwell got married and is now Caldwell Fargas and the LSU faithful are demanding her firing. Tons of transfers, losses of assistant coaches and bad w/l record. Close is a better coach and more professional so she might do well at Virginia but I agree she's seen her best days at UCLA.

Time for everyone to move on. I think Close might find a more receptive audience than in LA and UCLA definitely needs a different vision in their womens basketball program. Maybe a male coach would give them a shake up.
