: :
: : : : A great Xs and Os coach understands who to recruit to make the most out of their system.

: : : All coaches know who to recruit. The trick is to successfully recruit them. One of the marks of a good college coach is to get the talent in the first place.

: : : As far as being a Close "groupy" goes, I have commented very little on her. But the ridiculousness of some posters who use the fact that UCLA reached the Elite 8 as a justification for calling her a bad coach just brings out the ire in me.

: : : By the way, as the tourney played out, it turns out the PAC 12 was a very strong conference.

: : Kathy Olivier went to the Elite Eight. Was she a good coach? She also won the conference tournament and also won the conference title, something Close has not done. Kathy Olivier also was a known recruiting ace but as Tara V said after Olivier landed her #1 class, "it won't mean much with their coach."

: : And I think your defense of Close should include why she's a good coach. Because she reached the Elite Eight? Olivier did that and their overall records are sadly quite similar. You've heard numerous opinions about her lack of half court offense/defense (please explain what her offense consists of), slowness to change options on the floor and lack of leadership. So what is it that makes Close such a fine coach?

: I think the PAC 12 is tougher these days. The tournament has showed us that, for sure.
: Olivier, after 15 years won 52.5% of her games. Close, in 7 seasons has won 63.4% of her games. That's three to four more wins per season.

: What makes anyone think that UCLA should be more competitive than they have been?

:: They should have been more competitive because they had the #1 recruiting class - and other COACHES did (much) more - with less.
It doesn't stop with recruiting. Obviously - you have to be able to recruit talent. But you also have to know how to develop and actively coach that talent DURING A GAME. Coaching is not just recruiting. There's 3, 4, 5 jobs requirements.

Even the most rabid Katie Lou hater has to agree that KLS has improved - dramatically. Please lose the non-objective KLS "lens". Geno, can coach and develop players. He took a limited-mobility spot up shooter and in a couple years transformed her into one of the best D1 women's players. Defense, lateral movement, shooting off the dribble, and more. All of these things she learned after becoming a Huskie under Geno.

That is why UCLA should have been more competitive. Cori Close was like:

"#1 class. I've arrived. I'm done. Auto-pilot to PAC-12 title or NCAA final-four/championship.
Not so.
