: : : A great Xs and Os coach understands who to recruit to make the most out of their system.

: : All coaches know who to recruit. The trick is to successfully recruit them. One of the marks of a good college coach is to get the talent in the first place.

: : As far as being a Close "groupy" goes, I have commented very little on her. But the ridiculousness of some posters who use the fact that UCLA reached the Elite 8 as a justification for calling her a bad coach just brings out the ire in me.

: : By the way, as the tourney played out, it turns out the PAC 12 was a very strong conference.

: Kathy Olivier went to the Elite Eight. Was she a good coach? She also won the conference tournament and also won the conference title, something Close has not done. Kathy Olivier also was a known recruiting ace but as Tara V said after Olivier landed her #1 class, "it won't mean much with their coach."

: And I think your defense of Close should include why she's a good coach. Because she reached the Elite Eight? Olivier did that and their overall records are sadly quite similar. You've heard numerous opinions about her lack of half court offense/defense (please explain what her offense consists of), slowness to change options on the floor and lack of leadership. So what is it that makes Close such a fine coach?

I think the PAC 12 is tougher these days. The tournament has showed us that, for sure.
Olivier, after 15 years won 52.5% of her games. Close, in 7 seasons has won 63.4% of her games. That's three to four more wins per season.

What makes anyone think that UCLA should be more competitive than they have been?
