With travel ball "work outs" and viewing tournaments right around the corner, I just wanted to put out some advice for parents of high school players for the next few months.

DO go to a sponsored team's tryouts, if you hadn't planned on it already. I'm talking WCP, Cal Sparks, Cal Storm, Cal Swish, and GBL. You may not like the club, but it's a good idea to go see how they do things. These teams have to compete in national events against some of the top recruits in the country, so some of the top recruits in SoCal will play for them. It's a good gauge to see where your kid is skillwise.

DON'T be unrealistic. If your kid is the 3rd sub on varsity at a small school, don't think they're good enough for Team Taruasi or WCP Black. Be real...your kid isn't there. Those teams are filled with kids who are the stars at their schools.

DO go to college camps. Club coaches will downplay the need for this, but there is really no way for a coach to see every player out there. Make a list of schools and get your kid to those camps.

DON'T just go to D1 camps. California has a slew of D2 and NAIA schools, all of which can offer some money towards college costs. Free college is great, but nearly free college ain't too bad either.

DO ask questions about how many kids the club you're at or moving to have gone to college on scholarship. Clubs are quick to point out their D1 signees. Ask how those kids got to that point, and how many D2 and NAIA signees they have had. The true measure of a club is how many kids were signed overall each year, not just how many D1 players they produced.

DON'T think that it's too late to be recruited. D1s have already moved on to the 2019 class, but most D2s and NAIAs are still filling their 2018 classes. Research rosters and look for a good fit. Contact coaches and send film. If you have film of your kid playing with or against a player on their roster, send it. If you have a club or school connection to a current player, mention it. Ask if they have a camp and if seniors can attend. It's only too late when the first day of school comes around.

I know this is all old news to most people on here, but there are always new parents who find this site and don't know what to do. Just trying to be helpful.
