: : : UCLA needs coaching very badly. They have so much talent and we are all watching it go to waste as the offense stands around and waits for the great Jordan Canada to always make a play. Unfortunately, it's a one-on-one move offense. That's it. Replace this nice woman with a coach that can run an offense, adjust a defense, and get the ball moving. UCLA deserves so much better. Those talented girls should be in the top 5 with the right coaching. No, and I mean no, development of players is taking place. Please bring in some amazing coaching talent!

: : Those young ladies who committed to her program were sold a bill of goods that Close couldn't deliver. That's why so few top recruits have recently signed on. They learned the truth. Close cannot coach and she looks to have a problem with personality management.

: : This exact same coaching staff has been at UCLA for seven years. No changes because no one else wants them. They are still relying on the athleticism of the athletes instead of skill and teamwork.

: : I think UCLA is in danger of losing to USC this year and that would be the ultimate insult. However, they could also trounce them by 40. You can't anticipate what UCLA team shows up because Close has not been an effective leader who created a program. She's just lumped a bunch of athletes together and pray something good happens.

: If UCLA goes for an assistant, I think they'll consider ND's Niele Ivey and Carol Owens. Maybe MSU's Johnnie Harris and Cal's Charmin Smith or Stanford's Kate Paye. All are associate head coaches. Princeton's head coach Courtney Banghart would almost certainly be interested. Locally, April Phillips is a potential name, but is she ready for the Pac? If they go for a man, it becomes dicier. Even though he turned down USC and got a raise, Karl Smesko should be considered. However, he's never gotten past the second round of the tournament.

:: Karl Smesko is a great choice. If UCLA can restore faith among potential recruits and re-build bridges with the (especially local) club/AAU teams, that might work. Close IMO has been very much aloof - she's kinda one of these "Zen" cerebral coaches and really lacks (and her assts.) truly tactical coaching ability. They don't need a purely motivational coach - they need someone who can do the fundamental things like telling her team to move the ball, exploit the gaps, drive and kick, overload the zone, just common-sense 15-20 things that the team should've been doing on Sunday. It's so frustrating to watch.
