: : : Because they've never won CIF and have a low ranking.
: : Referring to teams "gaming the system" - of course teams do. Smart coaches know not to play high level teams so as to not accumulate points and move up.
: : This is of course not the idea - you should always play better (higher division) teams to get better. But current system discourages this.
: : The good part is the better (Open, 1AA) teams are playing each other more because lower level teams won't schedule them.
: : The other hole in the system is it only takes into account SS games. So a 3A team can go play La Jolla Country Day and it has no effect on their points. Same if they play a top City team.
: : Lastly, the .500 rule is also discouraging aggressive scheduling.
: : Remember, HS coaches jobs depend on winning games and making playoffs, not who they play.
: Of course some say play tougher teams to hopefully get better, don't win in your playoff group in first round and move up anyways because of formula and get clobbered in playoffs. Lower division teams won't play your team so how does this help? Simply include if you can't win in your playoff division you don't go up division(s). That would make sense. Regardless of formula someone won't be happy. That's who some tournaments are great because games may be more evenly matched and competitive and fun.
daughter's HS (in a difficult league) had brutal non-league schedules in the past, but due to the 500 rule scheduled much easier in tournament season. Once the playoffs made-the degree of difficulty in both league and non-league went up exponentially.
