: : : : What did it take all but 20 min to research and write this pathetic attempt at a GIRLS BASKETBALL preview........14 games into the season!!!!!
: : : Agreed!!! What an absolute joke of an article. Especially the playerís to watch. I sincerely hope that this isnít the only article the Daily News uses to preview the season. Did this writer even attend or the games?
: : Don't bash him he is covering what is his news paper covers so he is doing a piece on local players in Valley
: It is incredibly sad regarding the decline of high school sports coverage by local newspapers. The Southern California Newspaper Group, which owns the Register, Daily News, Daily Breeze, S. G. Valley Tribune, Pasadena Star News among others has accelerated this sad decline. They have so many good writers and journalists at these papers who have covered high school sports for years and instead of pooling their resources and expanding coverage, they have done nothing but cut...cut...cut all in the name of money. The Register used to have a reporter and story at EVERY high school football team played by an OC team. That stopped after the SC group takeover. They also had complete box scores for basketball, softball and baseball, now replaced by a skeleton version. This is really sad that something that was done really well in the past gets gutted in the name of money and a warped sense of "progress".
When we were in high school we students bought local papers on way to school to see sports results of other games because there was no maxpreps and internet. To this day we subscribe to daily paper because I don't want to be looking at electronic devices all day. My option. It also supports the newspaper that gives local businesses an affordable option to advertise their business. And yes I do also see ads on internet and I do buy from some companies on the internet. Less people are buying newspapers because they have cut back a lot on local news and sports coverage and dailies like to cover the "big schools and winning teams." They don't realize the more LOCAL coverage the more reason to buy the newspaper. Also, SGV Tribune covers Chino Hills and others who are actually located in the Pomona Valley, not San Gabriel Valley. So papers cover the big schools and lose money. People feel more inclined to buy a newspaper and buy from its advertisers because newspaper covers their local team, regardless of school size or won loss record. Feel compassion towards sports writers. Fred and James at SCNG are covering three dailies where each daily previously had its own local staff. In San Gabriel Valley, I don't want to read about San Bernardino or Long Beach colleges. I like to read about Cal State LA, APU, Cal Poly Pomona and JCs. But that's what you get when you have pool coverage by your limited staff. Maybe an exec from a daily will read this and realize there is steady income with local coverage and not regional news or big team news when they do cover something. We call in scores and they don't even get in part of the time. There used to be a page with smaller final scores from around SGV and that was popular from readers of yesteryear. Today one daily had one quarter page story and huge picture of one game and nothing else. Its a tough job for the very few sports editors to decide who to cover with limited resources.
