: : : : What is your opinion on UCLA and Coach Cori Close? No shade, seriously. It seems that they underachieve every year and she has great classes of players but never puts everything together. Is it the players, Close, the school's attitude, or everything? I don't even know what she did that got her the coach's gig. FSU has not suffered since she left and the recruiting in Tallahassee has soared.
: : : : She is a great recruiter but seems to be very slow on the mark on the floor. I think UCLA is on the verge of being a terminal second tier team but does the school suggest she get some new blood on her staff or look towards starting fresh? I think her contract is up this year and unless they've renewed, they're also not offering the big bucks to get someone like Kelly Graves.
: : : : So what say you, SCH fans?
: : :
: : : What you say seems pretty spot on.
: : : She is an excellent recruiter; have yet to talk to any player - whether they have played there or gone elsewhere - or even just went to her camps - who doesn't say anything but nice things about her.
: : : She runs a good, clean program, kids graduate.
: : : But, as you say, her teams seem to underachieve. They are favored to win the Pac 12, with two of the top players in the country.
: : : That being said, I fully expect Oregon and/or Stanford to finish ahead of them.
: : : She isn't a bad coach, she just isn't a great coach. And schools like UCLA and USC should always have great coaches in all sports (but USC is a whole other conversation when it comes to women's hoops! LOL).
: : : I have seen her get out-coached several times. And not just by VanDerveer or Thorne. Graves, Rueck, Neighbors before he left Washington. And a couple games here or there, and especially in the Pac 12 or NCAA tourney have consistently held UCLA back from being elite.
: : : In the end, it really comes down to what UCLA expects from the program. It doesn't make them any money, so I don't think they will pony up the cash for a big name coach. Especially when they will probably have to come up with big bucks to buyout Mora after the football season.
: : : They struck gold once when they hired Caldwell when she was an assistant. Someone really needs to be looking at smart, dynamic assistants or rising mid-major coaches (as Graves was at Gonzaga).
: : : Or, they can keep her and be satisfied with being a Top 25 program every year, in that 3-6 range in Pac 12 while running a good program and graduating players.
: : Both UCs in the Pac, UCLA and Cal have weak female coaches. Some schools feel the need to try to keep female coaches with female teams. It can work, like Adia Barnes who is doing great things for Arizona, although it's still really early. But instead of trying to find the best coach, if the AD's or assistant AD's are more interested in being PC than developing their program, they're limiting their pool and potentially missing out on the best fit for the school.
: : I agree Coach Close is a nice lady, is a good administrator and has run a clean ship. All very important, but the Ws are important as well. Everyone on her staff appears to get along well, but perhaps she needs to shake things up because this recruiting year has not gone exceptionally well and some club coaches are now leading their players elsewhere.
: No CLUB coach is telling their players to avoid UCLA.....are you crazy! Its UCLA. If they are getting looks and offers from UCLA they are taking it. NON of these ladies will be playing past their 30's. Its about education and enjoying your college experience while playing at the next level.
: I saw some post awhile back saying 40K was big money!!! LOL -
: 40 k is chump change in the grand scheme of things. A UCLA grad will make that in 3 months.
If you're a top flight recruit and you have a choice between UCLA, Texas, Tennessee, UConn, FSU, etc. the only reason one would choose UCLA would be education. If you're in LA, the other reason would be proximity. As it is, the top club coaches are suspicious of the current coaching staff. One is especially upset at how his top recruit has not even gotten All American status at UCLA, when she would have been on for at least two years if she went to, say Notre Dame.
That 40K figure below was in reference to the WNBA saying that that isn't bad for four months work and it isn't. All things equal, you'd much rather have a UCLA degree than many others but there are still lots of UCLA grads with worthless degrees who are hardly pulling in 10k a month.
