: : Now that season is a month away what are the top 10 city teams looking for like right now ? Is there any sleeper to look out for? No negative comments please.
: Well, if you have been reading the message board you already know Granada will be a top team BUT let's go deeper into it.
: Top teams in City that will PROBABLY make Open Division in NO ORDER are
: Eagle Rock
: Those are the top teams in the City in MY EYES.
: Granada has a very solid team overall
: Carson got transfers in and one of the Transfers was a top player at windward
: Fairfax returns their all everything point guard. Don't know how much help she will have this year
: Eagle Rock made open last year and returnered basically their whole team
: Legacy is solid and has a solid guard
: Westchester will be good this year since the major weapons of their team came back.
: ECR has a solid squad with their top player going to Long Beach State. They will be a top team
: Narbonne- honestly, don't know much about them but their coach always has them ready to battle
: Birmingham- sleeper team. They are in the same league as Granada and ECR and should be one of the top teams in City. It's gonna come down to what the committee wants as their last team.
: My 3 cents
That was a pretty good breakdown.
Still weird to have this discussion with no Palisades.
If there is a favorite this early in October, I would say Granada Hills. Two really solid players, a top coach in the Section, and they play together all year. But they have been vulnerable to speed and presses in the past, so have they cleaned that up? Had a good win vs. Lancaster this weekend.
Carson will be strong with their transfers, especially Hawaii commit Joseph. They key is can they get her the ball. Obviously was not the focus of the Windward offense, so we will see what she can do as the main player now.
Fairfax has Lair - in the conversation for POY - but what else? They had a solid frosh last year, but basically everyone else graduated. And a new coach. Lair is going to have to do more than just drive to the hoop this year when it comes to the better teams; she doesn't have her running mate to clean up the misses.
El Camino is the wild card here. New coach. How they play now? They were blowing out Canyon (supposedly a SS Open bubble team) on Saturday before the coach sat their two best players for 8 minutes and let them back in it. And they didn't press, which has been their MO. Time will tell here.
These are the top four teams to me right now. We will have a better idea in December after some tournaments and games. I looked and saw Granada picked up their schedule this year, going to Phoenix and playing in Sierra Canyon tourney. El Camino is in Redondo tourney and has Harvard Westlake on schedule. Fairfax is going to Clovis West tourney. Carson doesn't have much loaded yet.
As for the rest, Eagle Rock got run in the playoffs last year, and don't usually play a very challenging schedule. Until they beat a good team, they aren't in the discussion for final four. Legacy has really good returning player and is playing in Fairmont Prep tourney, so should get an idea there.
Westchester has a new coach so we will have to see what effect that has good or bad. Narbonne is improving but I don't know if they have enough scoring based on what I saw last year. And Birmingham is well coached but really just don't have the horses to contend, but could sneak into Open.
I think this will be a good season in City Section - the better teams are playing some good SS teams, and there doesn't seem to be a super-team, so the playoffs should be wide open.
