: : : We were out of town this weekend so didn't go to our game...can someone who was there comment on these games:
: : : Sierra vs. Oaks - were they full squads? What does Oaks look like in the post-Boyer era?
: : : Brentwood vs Oaks - On the surface this looks like a mismatch but I heard Brentwood got some new kids?
: : : El Camino vs Royal - is this the first game for El Camino? What did they look like with new coach?
: : : Granada Hills vs Canyon - two of the better teams in SFV/SCV area - was everyone there for both teams? Was Granada able to contain Bowers?
: : : Rio Mesa vs. Ribet - Is the giant 6'9" girl from New Jersey enrolled? Did she play? If so between her and Mensah they may be the only low post oriented team around!
: : : Thanks in advance for any constructive comments.
: : : Oaks lost double digits to Sierra who didn't have Payne and starting big.
: : Oaks over Brentwood by double digits.
: : :Granada over Canyon, it wasn't even close. Canyon was sloppy and couldn't get the ball to their big. PG is slow and limited handle. Dribbles with her head down, I don't know how she got selected for All CIF last year.
: : : Ribet started slow but soon as they got going there was no looking back. They will win their CIF division for sure.
: Oaks vs Sierra Canyon- Sierra won by 15. Sierra missing Payne and Olinger. Oaks missing blond guard. Sierra looks really good and with a full squad will have a hard time finding ANYONE to beat them. Sierra no match for Oaks
: Oaks vs Brentwood- Brentwood won in a close game. High scoring game. Brentwood only had 6 players. Oaks only had 7. I know the blond from Oaks was missing. Fun game
: Granada vs Canyon- Granada beat them fairly easily. Granada is really really good. Enough bashing them. Its time to embrace them
: El Camino vs Royal- El Co handled them easy. Royal is rebuilding. Not a game that should have been scheduled
: Rio Mesa vs Ribet- Tall kid played. Rio is scrappy but was no match for Ribet. I don't know Ribets team Ribet should be very tough in their CIF division. Rio looks young. Should be good in a few years
: Hope this helps
Granada has been very solid for the last few years. They just get dismissed as being no good, as does El Camino and every other City team just because they aren't in SS.
Are any of those teams (GH, ECR, Pali, Fax) as elite as Mater Dei, Chaminade, LBP traditionally are? No. But that doesn't mean they aren't good.
The advantage Granada has right now over many teams is they play year around together as a team. Even their two main players (Mitchell and Miranda) forgo club/travel events to play with their high school team. So when they play in Summer/Fall, they rarely do not have a full team (or at least their main rotation players).
The last couple of years, Granada has not played a very challenging non-league schedule; opting for medium-level tourneys as opposed to the Palisades and Redondos of the world. Usually they mix in a couple of good games (Valencia, AV, etc.) and that's it.
This year however, they are in a new tourney called the Sierra Canyon Invitational. They play Serra, Ventura, Rosary Academy, and Sierra Canyon the first week of December. That's when you will know how good they are.
Then they go to Nike TOC in Phoenix. Be interesting to see what division they sign up for/are assigned to.
Regardless, at this point they are the favorites in the City Section this year; at least as of now.
