: : : : The $2000 figure is about correct - some district pay more but nothing close considering how much time they spent. A friend once said his wife calculated that he was making “12 cents an hour” for the time he was spending away from her.
: : : : Most coaches try and augment this through camps and other activities but this truly is a profession of passion not profit.

: : : The $2000 number is an old number. I would guess the median is around $3700 with some districts paying $5000 +. Summer camp fees are harder to get with so many private club basketball teams dominating youth players court time. Additionally, some school districts seek to cap summer income for coaches - a deterrent to running big camps.
: : The stipends are public info, they are determined by the district. South county schools are probably in the mid 3k, like most orange county schools. Some LA county schools are lower in the 2k range. 3k for 6-8 hour days, 6 days a week, during the months of Nov/Dec/Jan is pitiful compensation. Then there is the spring and fall as well, which the district doesn't compensate for. Some boosters will stipend their coaches during the offseason, which makes it more bearable.
: Much appreciation and respect to all coaches for taking the time to coach. All for the love of the game.
I coached varsity at a public school that was always competitive and always in the top 10 in the county. Between traveling, taking time off from my actual job, film, weekend workouts/games, etc. I paid to be a coach. I loved every second of it and I would do it again. At the end of the day, my goal was to help kids turn into responsible young adults and enjoy the game they and I loved.
