: You tell um!
Jeanie didn't give Deng and Mozgov insane contracts, and there were reports Jim Buss and Mitch wanted to trade BI for an aging veteran when the team was 19-35 in 2017. They were fired a week later.
However, the team could've waited another year on Russell and possibly done better (more on that later), although Hart was looking good before his knee injury and Russell has a $20 million cap hold this offseason. Randle and Russell probably get this team to the playoffs, but there is a ceiling to how good those two could coexist w/LeBron (who already is a bad fit w/ Ingram).
The argument for trading Russell when we did? If he hit Restricted Free Agency without signing an extension before this summer, the Lakers couldn't sign any max free agents with his 20 million dollar cap hold (unless Lonzo was dumped). Russell had a very bad 2018 as well, but still chose to not negotiate a long term deal with the Nets last summer.
Randle knew any deal he signed with the Lakers would be in every trade discussion, and would only do it for 8 figures. Any offer below that and he could've played hardball with Magic and waited to take the qualifying offer, which would've left a cap hold of $12.5 million against the Lakers last summer during the first month of free agency. In hindsight he would've been better than KCP or Rondo, maybe the Lakers should've forced him to play under the qualifying offer.
