: : : Jeanie Buss. Works off of emotion. Gave Kobe ridiculous 2 year final contact which was start of the demise of the organization unless they pick up two major players within next two years. Besides the comedy of errors between the biggest F'UP was not hiring JERRY WEST. Again, emotional Jeanie hired Magic and Rob. I truly miss Dr. Buss!
: : I miss both Jerrys too, but the franchise was destroyed by four things:
: : 1. Odom leaving for nothing in return after CP3 trade veto while the window was still open for championships
: : 2. Trading 2 first and 2 second-round picks for Nash, then signing him to a 3-year deal worth over $30 million
: : 3. A promising young all-star in Bynum deteriorating to the point the Lakers traded him and a 1st rounder for a one-year rental that didn't work out
: : 4. Hiring D'Antoni over Phil under the assumption that Kobe could play off-ball and Dwight could be the pick-and-roll threat with Nash that Amar'e was
: : 5. Kobe's Achilles tear
: : Kobe getting that contract ended up helping the Lakers keep an extra 1st round pick that would've gone to Philly via Phoenix as a part of the failed Nash trade. Otherwise the money would've gone to veterans that would've lifted the Lakers to 30 wins, so no Russell/Ingram/Lonzo. Those picks gave the Lakers a chance to gain a franchise changing player, too bad the Lakers missed out on Mitchell and Fox last year, and never got the #1.
: : Kobe's $50 million deal was the result of the Lakers' demise, which started with the vetoed CP3 trade. A year later, D'Antoni was hired over the phone on his hospital bed while possibly high on painkillers, in hopes he could turn the plodding Lakers roster into the Phoenix Suns. This came after the entire preseason was devoted to installing the Princeton offense under Mike Brown.
: : In July 2014, Pau Gasol actually turned down more money from the Lakers, he preferred a chance at a ring. Free agents were unimpressed with Mitch and Jim's pitches, Melo was offered more money than LA could offer, Aldridge publicly shamed the Lakers after they offered him his own show on TWC SportsNet.
: : Immediately after Kobe came off the books, $34 million was spent on Deng and Mozgov. That's the caliber of player a team who essentially lost their four best players and two draft picks for nothing in the past 30 months.
: : tl;dr Lakers weren't getting anyone significant with that money
: They just dont buckle down and play team defense
They also let Randle walk and traded Russell. If they kept them both on the team right now they would be better than Lonzo and all the 1 year free agents they signed
