: : : : I have a question. During your travel team game, a kid on the opposing team gets mad that he is being closely guarded and loses it and slaps the player in the face that is guarding him. A technical foul is called and the opposing coach takes his player out of the game.

: : : : (The kid was NOT ejected) A few minutes later the coach puts his player back in the game. Would YOU have put the kid back in the game after he intentionally slapped a player in the face? Is winning at all costs now the norm? What do you think? (middle school division)

: : : The player paid the penalty, tech for his team. Coach pulled him out to cool him down/talk with him. Do need to consider, how deep, how important is this game, history of the player in other heated games/practices, typical mentality of the player and you never know what was said to this player by the defender or fans etc to set player off. But w/o knowing more, no harm done by subbing player back in.

: : Good points - all. I think you do need to take into account all of it . Including the overall behavior/history of the player. That said, IF a player deliberately strikes another player, id probably bench him for the remainder of the game.

:
: This was obviously a middle school game recently, which means it was by no means THAT important.

: As a coach, I fall on the "teachable moment" side of this, especially at that age. If anything, if sitting the player causes the team to lose, the message is driven home even harder, maybe preventing it from happening in the future.

Actually, if the game was being played under high school rules, he should have been ejected. In any high school game a player who punches, slaps or kicks another player intentionally is automatically ejected. Case closed.
Thus with that in mind the coach should not sub the player back in.

: As a parent, I would not be upset if the coach sat my kid for doing this. In fact, I would be disappointed in the coach for not sitting them the whole game and then us all having a discussion about the action after the game.
