: : : : : : : : Two d1 players with size and they are 9-9? Lost by 25 to Newport and theirnimciach wasn’t even there... what’s happening?
: : : : : : : It takes more than just talent and size. Their guard play is not very good and neither is their chemistry. Someone is going to blame the coach, and it is tough to hold him blameless, but sometimes the group just can't get it done.
: : : : : : Newport harbor looks a lot like a Princeton team of old...don't turnover the ball, shoot lights out, back door cut you to death, great defense. A formula built to beat and embarass teams that aren't well coached despite superior talent.
: : : : : 1- Newport Harbor is really good.. they're 14-1 by the way..
: : : : : 2- Marina has played a very nice schedule.. 2-2 in Chicago tournament.. losses to Villa Park (15-1) & Mater Dei (11-1).. not to mention Downey (12-2), Palos Verdes (11-2), Schurr (11-3). That's 5 losses in CA to teams with a combined 60-7 record. Let's not push the ejection button.. yeah, would be nice to win a couple of those, but if you don't have really good guards (which they don't), you're going to have some problems with elite level teams.
: : : : The Marina Coach cannot Coach! He has 3 Division 1 players and cannot win! Marina and Los Alamitos use to be good, but Coaches win games in high School. They both should be winning 25 games every year!
: : : Correction to previous post.. they have 6 losses to CA teams with a combined 74-8 record.
: : : You can't say it's all coaching. Coaches don't miss FTs or commit silly fouls at the wrong time, or throw the ball to the wrong team.. Coaches also don't make big 3's or settle in and make big FTs with the game on the line. They don't dive for one loose ball or set one screen.
: : : Coaches make adjustments and make calls. They run practice and try to get the team prepared.
: : : As for Marina- again, if you don't have guards that are above average, you're not going to win- no matter how good your forward or post player is. Their big 6'10 kid is decent- but he's going to be redshirted in college, guaranteed. The 6'5 wing is good, but he's not someone you put the ball in his hands and say "go win us a game" or even "go run the team."
: : : Do you realize Marina hasn't won 25 games EVER as far back as Maxpreps goes (04-05). They went 23-7 in 08-09. They had a couple 16 win seasons at the height of the 3-diculous era with Coach Holmes.. but even his teams had some losing seasons. That Marina "should be a 25-win team" is simply not historically accurate because it's never happened in the last 13 years. Get a grip.
: : Don't coaches teach their players not to commit silly fouls or be loose with the ball? or teach them to dive for loose balls or set real screens? I'm not going after Racklin, but your statement. Coaches influence all of those things by the culture and accountability they instill within their teams. I haven't seen Marina play since the summer and I give them the benefit of the doubt for their tough schedule. Let's wait and see what happens in league, which is the purpose of playing all those tough games. Win count doesn't get you a banner or a ring.
: If you haven't seen them play, then why try making a point that they're not well-coached? That's absurd. Because you don't know if Rack's kids get after loose balls, set good screens, make good passes, make silly fouls, or play selfishly.
: As for win counts not mattering- wasn't there a post earlier saying they should be a 25-win team every year? Which is easily refuted by the fact that it's never happened- at least not since Cherokee Parks.
You didn't read what I wrote, I was countering your statement about a coach's influence upon players, and specifically said I wasn't critiquing Marina's coaching. I'm not the one who wrote that he can't coach and would never make a statement about winning 25 of 28 games per year, because I know what I'm talking about. I'm on your side bud, don't get emotional and lose your reading ability.
