Boys basketball roundup: Saugus basketball shocks Alemany in tournament opener

MISSION HILLS >> Saugus basketball’s Adrian McIntyre impressed in the Centurions’ season opening victory over tournament-host Alemany 62-56.

The junior guard scored 24 points, including an impressive break-away dunk that gave Saugus a 26-11 lead in the first half. Alemany’s only lead of the game was after its opening possession when Chigozie Achara converted on a quick layup.

McIntyre wasn’t the only impressive player for Saugus, freshman Nathan Perez finished with 15 points and center Camron Nale added 13.

Brandon Whitney led Alemany with 24 points, including 12 made free throws.

Camarillo 82, Santa Clarita Christian 75 (Alemany Tournament)

UCLA-bound Jaime Jaquez scored seven straight points in the final 90 seconds to ballon the Camarillo lead from three to 10 on his way to a 36-point performance. Landreau Tate Jr. added 13 for the Scorpions in their season opener.

Santa Clarita Christian was led by Kaleb Lowery (17), Caden Starr (16) and Andrew Thompson (15), but couldn’t find an answer for Jaquez. The Cardinals dropped their season opener after winning the CIF Southern Section Division 5AAA and Division V State title.

Valencia 78, Maranatha 56 (Alemany Tournament)

Richard Kawakami led the Vikings their first win of the season with 20 points. Jake Hlywiak 18; Assiff 12.


Alemany tournament semifinals: Saugus will take on Camarillo at 6 p.m. and Damien will face Damien at 7:30 p.m. on Friday evening.

Sierra Canyon 96 Montgomery (San Diego) 47

Cassius Stanley led the Trailblazers with 19 points in their season-opener. Scotty Pippen Jr. scored 17, KJ Martin had 15, and Terren Frank added 12.

Freshman Amari Bailey had six points in his high school debut.

Birmingham 67, Harvard-Westlake 58 (Redondo Tournament)

David Elliott scored 30; Elisha Cofield had 16 for Birmingham. Harvard-Westlake has been without Johnny Juzang, Mason Hooks and Truman Gettings all week due to illness, according to coach David Rebibo.

Viewpoint 70, Fillmore 33

Ben Yarovinsky had a team-high 24 points for the Patriots in their season-opening win. Devan

Chung 13 points; Kian Nader 12.

Heritage Christian 77, Westlake 57

Dillon Depina led the Warriors (1-1) with 22 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Quincy

Bentley 18; Kyle Frelow 17 and 18 rebounds; and Noah Fernando 12.

Bryce Howard had 11 points, five rebounds and six assists for Westlake.

Highland 64, Crespi 60

Highland was led by Julian Williams’ 28 points in the Bulldogs season opener. Damian Guest Jr scored 14 and Jayden Madise added 10.

Crespi’s Kyle Owens (Montana commit) scored 28 points and had six rebounds. Ellis Kahn had 16 points, six rebounds.

Village Christian 71, Vaughn 36

Andrew Chase 17 points; Bryce Calhoun 15 points; Matt Lee 11 points; and Quentin Roberts finished with 10 for Village Christian.

Sylmar 61 Poly 59

Ricky Jaime scored 15 points; Aaron Reyes had 12 points, four rebounds for Sylmar.

West Ranch 81, South Pasadena 46

Alex Grant scored 14 points and Robbie Meyers notched a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds for West Ranch. Clyde Seo and Deaken Stangl added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
