SOCAL HOOP GROUP.
Division 1-3A COY Votes
CIF-Southern Section Playoffs Coach Of The Year Predictions/Thoughts.
- 4AA-5A Coming soon.

**State Playoffs not taken into account.
We do not always give the championship team’s coach the award, instead, we watch for favorites, unlikely runs, and take the road to the finals into account.
- Votes are strictly based on our group’s (9 members of ex-coaches and SoCAL hoop analysts opinions ONLY).

Division 1:
Gary McKnight (#2 ranked Mater Dei) - a nice run put together throughout the playoffs, despite not having a typical Mater Dei like season. There were some struggles throughout the year, however, they beat a very solid Etiwanda Team in the Final game - convincingly.

Division 2AA:
Steve Garrett (#3 ranked Tesoro) and Michael Cooper (Unranked Culver City) - Tesoro, although favored, played incredible during their Division 2AA run, taking down a fantastic Lutheran team in the final game. Well coached and played hard all year. Garrett definitely has done a tremendous job with this ball club.
Cooper had his unranked guys rolling, but ultimately fell to Tesoro by 3. Have to give him credit for leading a group nobody really expected to make the semifinals buy not only but give the champion team a run for their money. Great game to be In attendance for!

Division 2A:
Randy Oronoz (#3 ranked La Mirada) and Nareg Kopooshian (Unranked AGBU)- La Mirada, although a favorite in the divison, came in as a tough defensive minded team made a great run to the finals and ultimately fell Short to an open Division Rancho Christian team (who beat Sierra Canyon, Liberty, and West Ranch during the year.
Kopooshian led an unlikely and unranked Armenian school (AGBU) past 3 ranked opponents and to the semifinals, including a convincing and well coached win over Diamond Bar - AGBU ultimately fell short to Rancho Christian. This was highly unexpected and really opened the eyes of many writers and analysts all over SoCAL, who would’ve never thought.

Division 3AA:
Matt Colton (#4 Buena) and Brendan Garrett (Unranked Camarillo)
Obviously nothing taken away from Donte Archie and powerhouse ST. Pius but they are simply too good for Division 3, and it showed.
Matt Colton did a phenomenal job leading his Buena team to the semifinals until falling to St. Pius. We watched that game live, very tough team for Buena to matchup with.
Brendan Garett with Camarillo made a run that I don’t think anyone really expected. Extremely well coached and an impressive win vs #2 Orangewood academy, a game we watched live. Garett made a super impressive run with his Scorpions.
This team was a joy to watch all playoffs.

Division 3A:
Kevin McCloskey (#9 San Gabriel Academy) and Tim Godley (#11 Bonita)
Kevin McCloskey led his #9 SGA team to a come from behind CIF Championship against a favored Oakwood team. SGA was down majority of the game and put together a really good 4th quarter to ultimately secure the win.
Tim Godley led his team to a terrific postseason run, ultimately falling to the CIF Champions. Along their route to the semifinal game, they also upset the favorite and #1 seed, Paraclete. Great game to send a staff member to, as those kinds of upsets don’t particularly happen everyday.

This rounds up our COY Votes: Thank you for reading.
Again, these are not to spark arguments, instead, they are simply our votes/opinions.
