: : : Can anyone direct me to where I can find the definitive rules on transferring to another school and how it affects eligibility in sports. I need to know what the options are for my son as we are very likely to be exiting his current school. We can't go to the AD at the school he's currently at, as we don't want rumors to start until we have all the facts and are ready to make the move.
: : : I'd welcome any pointers to the correct information on these transfer rules. Thank you.
: : If you're 100% going to transfer, DO NOT LET HIM PLAY A SINGLE MINUTE ON THE TEAM AT HIS CURRENT SCHOOL. Unless your family moves (valid change of address), if your son steps foot onto the court in a regular season game (starting Monday), regardless of what level (yes, even in a FR game), he will be ineligible at the new school for 12 months.
: : If your family unit moves, that is a different story. He'll be able to play. But just know, that if you have one foot in and one foot out.. "we're outta here, just not sure when/where yet.." you're going to cost your kid an entire calendar year of eligibility if he plays one second. Just quit the team and make your decision. It's what's best for him and for the other kids who he's turning his back on.
: That is true what is listed above.
Thank you very much for your response. You are kind to offer your perspective. May I ask if my child plays this season at a public school and then decides to enroll in a private school, does the same restriction apply to participate on the basketball team?
I would still like a referral to someplace or organization where I could read the actual rules. If anyone can point me in that direction, I'd be grateful.
