If a player does not have the motivation to practice on his own,the time and money spent on training goes down the drain. Also, many of the isolated skills drills used by trainers don't translate well to game conditions, because they often don't involve a defender and another offensive player. Young players in particular need to understand situational basketball; how to think the game and be efficient.
That is not what most youth trainers are doing. When you get advanced high school,college and NBA your traditional isolated skills training is easier to translate to the court due to the experience of the players.
