: : : : : : Does anyone know what high schools have head coach vacancies or are there any Varsity coaches looking for an Assistant?

: : : : : check cif

: : : : One bit of advice - for many years I believed that coaching HS basketball (varsity) was the ultimate i could achieve in the coaching world. I was wrong. I was recently hired as an assistant varsity coach at a good private school. Its NOT all what i thought it would be.
: : : : Be careful, sometimes in life, be careful what you wish for, because it might come true.

: : : Coach- what do you mean about this? Very open ended statement. Would like to hear why it's not what you thought it would be.

: : Im not saying its all bad, its just different. When you are a Head Coach anywhere, any level, for 30+ years, and you love it, then move to an assistant varsity position, where you assist and dont do things you like doing or have done for a long time, it takes some getting used to. As an assistant coach, part of your job is to make the Head Coach look good. You support the Head Coach and adhere to whatever he/she wants to teach. Im just so used to doing "my own thing" its different following someone elses lead. Thats all Im saying. I may adjust moving forward, or, I may not - LOL. Many friends of mine "assumed" I would be a great assistant varsity coach. I wasnt sure. My point is this, quite often in life, we "assume" taking a higher position/promotion, is good for you. Bit the truth is, sometimes, when you find something you are good at and love it, dont leave it because lifes too short.

: Vet coach. Have you taken your prescription meds today? You full of something.

Being an assistant after years of being a head coach I think would be difficult unless you were assisting a friend or someone who gave you something that you were in charge of and did it your way. Doing things another person's way is difficult when you have always been in charge. The assistant needs to support the head coach, back the head coach in every move the coach makes, must emphasize what the head coach wants no matter how the assistant coach feels. This is not easy for someone who has been in charge. For someone working their way up, the coaching chain, for a young coach, the experience as an assistant can be invaluable. But, once you have been a head coach for a long time, it can be hard. I have done both, and now that I have been a head coach for a long time, the only way I would ever be an assistant again, is if I was between head coaching jobs and working for one of my good friends who I know I could say or disagree freely without reservation and know that my opinion was being at least, considered. That would be the only way.
